Tampa, FL — The New York Yankees have settled their rotation question for the start of the 2026 season. Manager Aaron Boone made it clear that the team is done shopping for starting pitchers, at least for now.
With the Yankees spring training set to start at the team’s Tampa complex, Boone outlined a five-man rotation that will carry the Bronx Bombers into opening day. The lineup features Max Fried at the top, followed by promising young arms and veteran depth options.
The announcement puts to rest weeks of trade speculation. New York had been linked to several arms on the market, including Freddy Peralta and MacKenzie Gore. Both pitchers landed elsewhere, and the Yankees appear content with their internal options.
Boone’s confidence in current roster
Speaking on MLB Network Radio on Sunday, Boone expressed satisfaction with the pitching staff already in place. His comments signal that Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and the front office have moved past their hunt for rotation upgrades.
The team expects to open with Fried, Cam Schlittler, Will Warren, Ryan Weathers and Luis Gil filling out the rotation. Paul Blackburn and Ryan Yarbrough provide additional insurance if needed.
“We’re talking about probably [Max] Fried, [Cam] Schlittler, [Will] Warren, [Ryan] Weathers and [Luis] Gil to start the season in the rotation,” the Yankees manager said.
“And you always have [Ryan] Yarbrough and [Paul] Blackburn there that can fill that role very capably.”
The Yankees had explored adding another front-line starter during the offseason. Peralta ended up with the Mets, while Gore joined the Texas Rangers. With those options gone, New York shifted focus to maximizing what it already has.
Return timeline for injured aces
The Yankees decision to stand pat makes more sense when considering who is coming back. Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are both working their way back from surgery and should join the rotation during the 2026 campaign.
Cole underwent Tommy John surgery last March after tearing his UCL. He has been progressing well through his rehab program and could return as early as late May. The 2023 Cy Young winner last pitched a full season in 2023.
Rodon had bone chips removed from his left elbow in October following the playoffs. His recovery is ahead of Cole’s. Boone watched Rodon throw a bullpen session in Tampa on Friday.
“I don’t think Carlos is going to be very long,” Boone noted. “We’re in Tampa now. I watched him throw his bullpen two days ago, so he’s already well into his mound progression. We’re not going to rush him back.”
The Yankees left-hander is expected to make his 2026 debut sometime between late April and early May. Rodon posted a career-high 18 wins in 2025 with a 3.09 ERA across 33 starts.
Clarke Schmidt also remains on the mend from Tommy John surgery he underwent last July. His return could come in the second half if rehab goes according to Yankees plan.
Depth strategy for early season
The Yankees built their pitching staff with an eye toward surviving the opening months. The organization believes it has enough arms to compete in the brutal American League East while waiting for reinforcements.
“We feel like our depth is good, especially, hopefully, to get us through the early parts of the season,” the Yankees skipper said, “and then be in a stronger position as the calendar unfolds into the summer months.”
Fried anchors the group. The left-hander led MLB with 19 wins last season while posting a 2.86 ERA over 195.1 innings. He finished fourth in American League Cy Young voting and earned his fourth career Gold Glove Award.
Schlittler emerged as a revelation during the Yankees’ second half of 2025. The rookie posted a 2.96 ERA in 14 starts and delivered a dominant playoff performance against Boston. His eight-inning, 12-strikeout gem in the Wild Card Series showed he can handle pressure.
Warren made 33 starts as a rookie in 2025 and showed promise despite some growing pains. Gil won American League Rookie of the Year in 2024 but battled injuries last season. He finished with a 4-1 record and 3.32 ERA in 11 starts.
Weathers arrived via trade from Miami in January. The Yankees see upside in the 25-year-old left-hander and believe pitching coach Matt Blake can unlock more from his arsenal.
What this means for trade deadline
The Yankees are not ruling out adding pitching later. If injuries strike or performance lags, Cashman could revisit the trade market before the August 1 deadline.
The team has a history of making mid-season moves to shore up weaknesses. In 2025, they acquired multiple relievers to fortify the bullpen. A similar approach could apply to the rotation if circumstances change.
For now, the message from Boone and the organization is clear. They like what they have. The focus shifts to getting Cole and Rodon back healthy while the young arms develop.
Once everyone returns, the Yankees will face a different problem. With seven viable starters for five spots, tough decisions loom about who stays in the rotation and who moves to other roles.

Challenge ahead in competitive division
The American League East promises to be one of baseball’s toughest divisions in 2026. The Toronto Blue Jays won the pennant last year. Baltimore remains loaded with young talent. Boston added pieces over the winter.
New York finished 94-68 in 2025, tying Toronto for the best record in the American League but losing the division on a tiebreaker. The team reached the Division Series before falling to the Blue Jays.
The Yankees rotation depth becomes even more critical in this environment. Every team in the division can hit. Pitching and defense will separate contenders from pretenders.
The Yankees ranked 14th in team ERA last season at 3.91. Getting Cole and Rodon back should improve those numbers significantly. The question is whether the current group can hold serve until the cavalry arrives.
Spring training games begin February 20 against Baltimore. Opening Day is set for March 25 in San Francisco against the Giants. The Yankees return home for their Bronx opener on April 1 against the Minnesota Twins.
