Ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone shed light on his decision to leave outfielder Jasson Dominguez out of the starting lineup. Boone explained the strategy behind his choice, citing matchups and his preference for left-handed hitters.
“I kind of wanted my lefties in there today,” Boone said. “Dominguez is better suited from the left side, but when you consider a guy that’s really tough on righties, I wanted to keep Doogie [Gregory Allen] playing and have a stronger left-handed presence in the lineup. I knew I was giving Wells [Austin Wells, the catcher] the day off.”
Boone’s calculated approach: Balancing playoff push and Jasson Dominguez’s development
Boone’s remarks come as part of his broader approach to lineups, particularly during the Yankees’ push for a playoff spot. By prioritizing matchups, Boone is carefully balancing his decisions, especially regarding young players like Jasson Dominguez.
Jasson Dominguez, often referred to as “The Martian,” has been under the spotlight since his early days as a Yankees prospect. The New York Post noted that as early as February 2020, Dominguez was the subject of conversations during spring training in Tampa. Signed out of the Dominican Republic for a notable $5.1 million, Dominguez has carried high expectations since he was just 16 years old. However, the organization has been mindful of managing those expectations to avoid overwhelming him with pressure.
Yankees’ international scouting director Donny Rowland expressed cautious optimism about Jasson Dominguez back then, acknowledging the buzz around the young player. “People have heard about this kid since he was 16,” Rowland said in 2020. “In five years, if he’s not in the majors, people will say, ‘What happened to him?’ But he’ll still only be 21. I think he’s got the makeup and toughness to deal with it.”
Now, four years later, Jasson Dominguez has reached the big leagues and is quickly proving his talent, but Boone and the Yankees are still focused on easing him into the demanding pace of Major League Baseball.
As the Yankees continue their late-season push for the playoffs, Jasson Dominguez’s role will remain critical, though Boone’s decision to bench him on Wednesday demonstrates the careful management of his development and the team’s desire to put forth the best possible lineup for each game.
The team will undoubtedly continue to explore how to best utilize Jasson Dominguez while also maintaining their postseason ambitions, ensuring that the young star has the support and room to grow into his potential as a key contributor to the Yankees’ future.
