On June 7, the Yankees called up Billy McKinney to fill the spot on the Yankees roster left vacant after Aaron Judge was placed on the injured list. Setting aside cynicism, he has emerged as a pivotal figure to infuse life into the Yankees offense since then. Buoyed by his performance, the 28-year-old now seeks to ditch the journeyman tag and secure a long-term role in the team.

Billy McKinney has been the standout performer among the Yankees’ position players and has even overshadowed key veterans. The seasoned player, who is in his second stint with the Yankees, has unexpectedly become one of the most delightful surprises of the team’s season, impressively stepping into Aaron Judge‘s shoes.

In 15 out of the past 16 games, Billy McKinney has successfully reached base, hitting four home runs and showcasing strong defensive skills across all three outfield positions. This comes as a significant boost for the team, considering their previous struggles with outfield defense.

Over the weekend, manager Aaron Boone expressed his surprise by stating that he did not anticipate this level of production from Billy McKinney based on his performance during spring training.

The upcoming opponents, the A’s, probably did not expect this either, considering Billy McKinney’s struggles last year when he went 5-for-52 (.096) in 23 games with Oakland before being sent down.

Billy McKinney’s resolute push seeking a permanent Yankees position

As the Yankees head to Ringcentral Coliseum in Oakland, Billy McKinney packed up all his belongings and embarked on the flight to Oakland. Over the past 11 years, he has gained valuable wisdom about the importance of traveling with minimal luggage.

Whether sprinting on the base paths, showcasing his skills in the field, or navigating through life, Billy McKinney recognizes the significance of agility and adaptability. In the clubhouse on Sunday, he gestured toward his luggage, indicating that he was ready to embark on the team’s journey to the airport.

According to the Yankees‘ outfielder, his entire life is contained within his luggage, which he will be taking along on the road trip. But now Billy McKinney is carrying a red-hot bat with him and that possibly put an end to his journeyman tag assuring a long-term role on the Yankees MLB roster.

Since around 2018 or 2019, Billy McKinney has been accustomed to living in hotels, and this experience has made him acutely aware of the rapid fluctuations that can occur in the world of baseball. Selected by the Athletics in the first round of the 2013 draft, he found himself traded to the Cubs just one year later.

Prior to joining the Yankees, Billy McKinney reached the Double-A level in his baseball career. He was acquired by the Yankees alongside Gleyber Torres in a trade that involved sending Aroldis Chapman to the eventual World Series champions in 2016.

After making his debut with the Yankees and playing two games in 2018, Billy McKinney, unfortunately, suffered a shoulder injury. Subsequently, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays as part of the deal involving J.A. Happ.

Following his time with the Blue Jays, Billy McKinney had stints with the Brewers, Mets (where he was part of the bench mob in 2021), Dodgers, and Athletics, and eventually returned to the Yankees.

At the young age of 19, Billy McKinney experienced his first trade, which left him feeling stressed and even caused him to have a nosebleed during the journey to the airport. Nearly a decade later, McKinney found himself once again packing up his life, this time bringing it to Yankee Stadium on Sunday as he prepared to embark on a journey to the West for an upcoming series, eagerly anticipating what lies ahead in his baseball career.

However, if this newfound success is indeed genuine, Billy McKinney is wholeheartedly hopeful that he has finally discovered a permanent home with the Yankees.

“That’s the goal,” he said.

McKinney is focused on his performance to achieve this

The outfielder knows how his performance this season has effected a change that encompasses both mental and physical aspects. According to Billy McKinney, staying present at the moment and avoiding frustration have been crucial. Recognizing the caliber of competition in the big leagues, he understands that getting out is inevitable at times, even though he wishes for hits in every at-bat.

Billy McKinney expressed that in the past, he would allow struggles to weigh heavily on him. However, he has adopted a different approach now. Instead of dwelling on his difficulties, he strives to let go of them quickly, enabling him to concentrate on his next at-bat without unnecessary distractions. Fortunately, McKinney hasn’t had to discard a significant number of at-bats.

Since Aaron Judge’s injury on June 3, Billy McKinney has recorded an impressive OPS of .950, which is 195 points higher than the second-highest OPS among Yankees players (Willie Calhoun at .755).

Billy McKinney has been at the forefront of the team’s offensive production, leading in home runs, batting average (.302), hits (16), and RBIs (seven). Throughout his six-year career, which has seen him play for six different major league clubs, his batting performance has never reached its full potential.

Thanks to his impressive streak, Billy McKinney has managed to raise his career batting average to .213 and his OPS to .684. According to him, he has made subtle adjustments that he believes will lead to a significant breakthrough. However, he acknowledges that refining his swing is an ongoing process that requires continuous adjustments.

Billy McKinney explained that his focus has been on improving his ability to track the ball and positioning himself properly at the plate. He emphasized the importance of staying balanced and not lunging at pitches, which has helped him see the ball more clearly and make better contact.

Time will tell if Billy McKinney will be admired as a left-handed power hitter like Matt Carpenter or turn into another Franchy Cordero, a player the Yankees rely on for a brief period until his momentum fades away.

Both McKinney and the Yankees are optimistic about the possibility of the positive streak continuing.
