In the aftermath of Kim Ng’s decision to part ways with the Miami Marlins as their general manager, it’s worth revisiting the words of Derek Jeter when he made his own exit from the organization. Jeter, who served as the Marlins’ CEO for five years, had stated, “The vision for the future of the franchise is different than the one I signed up to lead,” back on February 28, 2022. However, former team president Derek Samson, who was let go by Jeter, vehemently contradicts this narrative.
Was Derek Jerer fired by the Miami Marlins?
Samson bluntly discredited Jeter’s parting statement, declaring, “It’s literally ridiculous that he said that. He was fired, period, because he said he would deliver certain revenue goals and certain things from a financial standpoint that he never delivered.”
It is worth noting that one of Jeter’s initial moves upon becoming CEO was to dismiss Samson, and Samson learned of this decision through an ESPN alert. From that moment, Samson has been openly critical of the revered New York Yankees legend.
In Samson’s perspective, Derek Jeter‘s hiring of Kim Ng as general manager may have been motivated more by public relations than a genuine belief in her baseball expertise. According to Samson, Ng’s groundbreaking appointment as the first female and first Asian-American general manager in North American professional sports was primarily about appearances. Samson implied that Ng’s role may have been more of a figurehead, while Jeter, with his close associate Gary Denbo, was actively involved in player procurement.
The Marlins power struggle: Samson’s bold claims about Jeter
Samson did acknowledge his respect for both Ng and Jeter, but he described their dynamic as part of a “power struggle” that is commonplace in many organizations. Reports suggested that Marlins owner Bruce Sherman considered appointing a president of baseball operations over Ng, a move that might have influenced Ng’s choice not to exercise her mutual contract option.
However, Samson’s central assertion is that Jeter effectively marginalized Sherman from significant baseball decisions, ultimately leading to Jeter’s dismissal. According to Samson, Sherman may not have been fully aware of crucial decisions, including the non-renewal of general manager Mike Hill’s contract, as Jeter had taken control of the reins without effective communication.
In light of these bold claims by Derek Samson, the narrative surrounding Derek Jeter’s departure from the Marlins takes on a new and intriguing dimension. Jeter’s initial statement about divergent visions now appears in a different light, with Samson’s account suggesting a deeper, potentially contentious internal struggle within the Marlins organization. Samson’s words challenge the pristine image of Derek Jeter, portraying a tenure marked by turmoil that ultimately led to his ousting from the Marlins’ leadership.

It was evident, at least to me, that some type of discord led to Jeter’s departure from The Marlins. Whether the rest of those assertions are true, who knows, and who cares, years later?
