It’s been nearly two weeks since the Yankees‘ offseason began, and there’s already plenty unfolding for the Bronx Bombers. But Bronx Bombers fans, at least for now, seem to lack faith that Juan Soto will stay in New York.
The Yankees announced this Friday that Aaron Boone will continue as the team’s manager. Boone’s season ended with a World Series loss to the Dodgers, but despite the disappointment, many fans hoped for changes that ultimately didn’t happen.
What’s going on with the Yankees?
According to reports on Friday, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner plans to meet with Juan Soto and his agent, Scott Boras, roughly a week and a half after Mets owner Steve Cohen’s scheduled meeting. Soto’s market value is expected to be substantial, potentially approaching the record $700 million contract awarded to Shohei Ohtani last winter.
At 26, Juan Soto’s combination of youth and proven talent makes him a highly sought-after asset. Although other teams—like the Blue Jays, Dodgers, Giants, Red Sox, and Rays—have shown interest, the primary competition seems to be between the Yankees and Mets.
Pessimism among Yankees fans
Ben Verlander of Fox reported on Wednesday that Juan Soto might not re-sign with the Yankees. According to Verlander, the Mets could potentially make Soto the highest-paid player in the world, giving him a better chance to win. He also suggested that over the next decade, the Mets might be better positioned than the Yankees to capture more World Series titles.
“The cold, hard reality of this is that the New York Mets are set up better to win over the next decade than the New York Yankees,” Verlander stated.
Following these developments, Yankees fans expressed skepticism about Soto’s future in the Bronx.
One fan on X (formerly Twitter) remarked, “I’ve revised my opinion. I don’t think Soto will re-sign with the Yankees.” Another added, “Soto is gone. He ain’t coming back to the Yankees.”
The underlying logic behind this pessimism seems tied to payroll concerns. Steinbrenner hinted at the start of the year that the Yankees wouldn’t make any extreme moves to sign a player. For many fans, this dropped hint has sparked doubts, leading some to think Soto might not return to the Bronx next year.
Some Yankees fans are speculating that Aaron Boone’s return as manager could be a sign that Juan Soto may not stay with the team. Despite the speculation, there’s no evidence in recent statements or interviews to support this theory. In fact, Boone has expressed a strong desire for Soto to remain with the Yankees, stating, “I hope he’s here forever.
As both the Yankees and Mets prepare to negotiate with Juan Soto, the outcome could dramatically reshape each team’s trajectory for the upcoming season. For the Yankees, retaining Soto would signal a commitment to building a stronger lineup, while losing him to their cross-town rivals might spark questions about their long-term strategy and willingness to compete financially. All eyes are on New York—will the Yankees secure their star or watch him slip away to the Mets?
