The Yankees keep strengths and confidence in Anthony Volpe’s performance as he might have discovered a new path towards regaining good form.
The New York Yankees believe in Anthony Volpe’s abilities and performance. Despite facing significant challenges, there were suggestions that he might be demoted to the Minor League. However, according to The Athletic and confirmed by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Volpe decided to take a break and spent his recent Mondays at his childhood home in New Jersey, accompanied by his parents, fellow Yankees prospect Austin Wells, and other former Double-A teammates. This break allowed Volpe to recharge and reflect on his game, surrounded by a supportive network of loved ones and teammates.
During this time, they enjoyed a meal of his mom’s chicken Parmesan and reflected on old minor-league highlights. This break made Volpe realize that his stance had become slightly closed, and his bat was too flat in his setup.
Before the matchup against the Mets, Volpe received encouragement from New York Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner and manager Aaron Boone. Thus, he boosted his confidence in his baseball abilities. Volpe expressed his outlook, saying, “I’m pretty out of the loop on many things.”
Anthony Volpe and his impressive performance over the Mets
Volpe had an impressive performance the day after his revelations and with newfound confidence. He went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, and a flyout that would have been a home run in Minute Maid Park, according to Statcast. His contributions were crucial to the Yankees’ 7-6 come-from-behind victory over the Mets at Citi Field.
According to statistics, Volpe’s performance as a hitter in MLB has been disappointing in 2023, ranking in the bottom 10 in multiple categories. As a result, the hitting coach felt compelled to comment on his recent performances. However, if Volpe’s intuition is correct, the rookie may have discovered the key to overcoming his season-long slump.
Boosted confidence: Anthony Volpe’s key to success
Volpe shared his thoughts on the adjustment, saying, “It was so small, but (Wells and I) both noticed it and started talking about it. I think we both took a lot away from it.” He emphasized that the change in his stance could have been more intentional but acknowledged that hitters could fall into bad habits during the 162-game season.
While it has been frustrating for Volpe, he finds solace in knowing that his adjustments align with his natural style of play. He aims to return to where he feels comfortable and will accept whatever outcomes come from there.
