Anthony Volpe emerged as the Yankees’ primary offensive catalyst, delivering three hits and driving in two runs. This marked his 11th multi-hit game of the season and his first three-hit performance since April 14th against the Cleveland Guardians.

Anthony Volpe’s second-inning single off Rays starter Zack Littell brought home two runs, but the inning came to an abrupt end when Trent Grisham was tagged out between second and third base on the play. Had Grisham held his ground at second, Littell would have been forced to face the formidable Juan Soto with two runners on base.

Expressing satisfaction with his performance, Anthony Volpe harped on the significance of consistently putting himself in a position to make solid contact with the ball and effectively execute his strategy. He explained that he was just trying to stick to his plan, stick to his approach, and keep putting himself in positions to barrel up the ball.

“I feel good,” the Yankees sophomore said. “I’m just trying to stick to my plan, stick to my approach and keep putting myself in positions to barrel up the ball. … When I’m doing what I’ve got to do and I’m covering the pitches I feel like I need to cover, then everything takes care of itself.”

Yankees manager Aaron Boone characterized the play as a mistake, speculating that Grisham might have misjudged the ball off the bat.

The Yankees mounted another threat in the seventh inning when Grisham was hit by a pitch, and Anthony Volpe greeted reliever Jason Adam with his third hit of the game, a single. However, the rally ultimately fell short, leaving the Yankees trailing in the contest.

Anthony Volpe has undergone a remarkable transformation as a hitter for the New York Yankees this season. Stepping into the leadoff role, he has turned over a new leaf and significantly elevated his offensive game. Despite showing flashes of promise and brief periods of solid hitting last year, Anthony Volpe’s overall performance was ultimately disappointing. However, an MLB analyst has highlighted the dramatic improvement in his play this season.

Jon Morosi, a well-respected analyst, has underlined Anthony Volpe’s pivotal role in the Yankees’ lineup. He mentioned that even Juan Soto, one of the game’s elite hitters, praised the young shortstop as a potential top-tier leadoff hitter, comparing the experience of playing with him to that of teaming up with Trea Turner. Morosi underscored Anthony Volpe’s impressive on-base frequency and overall enhancements at the plate, specifically noting that his whiff percentage has significantly decreased, ranking him ninth in MLB in terms of this improvement.

According to Morosi: “It really starts with Volpe in so many ways. …… Juan Soto said that Volpe can be a great leadoff hitter. He used the word great. You think about Soto playing with Trea Turner, that’s some high praise. The numbers back it up, how often Volpe has been on base…Improvements across the board. Ninth-largest drop in MLB in whiff percentage.”

Anthony Volpe’s rookie season was a rollercoaster ride. While he showcased his defensive prowess by winning a Gold Glove, stealing 24 bases, and hitting an impressive 21 home runs, his batting average of .209 and a strikeout rate of over 25% in his plate appearances left much to be desired. Despite the inconsistent offense, achieving a 20/20 season is a remarkable feat for a rookie. However, a wRC+ below 100 and a 27.8% strikeout rate were areas that needed improvement.

This year, Anthony Volpe has made strides in every aspect of his game. His wRC+ has jumped from 84 to 116, his strikeout rate has decreased to 21.1%, and his walk rate has increased from 8.7% to 11.4%. These improvements are particularly crucial considering his role as the leadoff hitter, setting the table for sluggers like Juan Soto and Aaron Judge.

Anthony Volpe’s offensive resurgence is not only evident in advanced metrics but also in traditional statistics. He has seen a substantial increase of 43 points in his batting average and an impressive 65-point jump in his on-base percentage while maintaining a similar slugging percentage. This indicates that while his power numbers have remained relatively consistent, he has significantly improved his ability to make contact and reach base safely.

His baserunning and defensive skills continue to be exceptional. After saving an impressive 15 defensive runs in 1,346.2 innings during the 2023 season, Anthony Volpe has already accumulated four DRS in just 330 innings this year. This puts him on track to surpass his Gold Glove-winning performance from the previous season.

In 2023, Statcast’s evaluation of Anthony Volpe’s range and arm was average, with a +1 Fielding Run Value. His average throw velocity of 81.8 mph placed him in the 28th percentile among shortstops, and he had only one Out Above Average (OAA), a metric that assesses a fielder’s range.

However, just one month into the 2024 season, Anthony Volpe has already amassed five OAA and four DRS, showcasing his remarkable defensive improvements. Even without being an ardent follower of defensive metrics, a comparison of his 2024 numbers to his 2023 performance clearly demonstrates his growth at the shortstop position. Not only has Anthony Volpe surpassed his previous year’s achievements, but he also stands out among his peers, with Statcast ranking his range in the 98th percentile.

While Anthony Volpe’s offensive game has experienced a significant boost, his defensive skills have also become more refined and have shown improvement. This development is a promising sign for the future of the shortstop position in the Bronx, something that hasn’t been witnessed since the era of Derek Jeter.
