Anthony Rizzo seized a chance for redemption in Game 4 of the ALCS, sparking the Yankees’ game-winning rally with a crucial single in the ninth inning. His hit against one of the league’s top closers helped New York recover from a blown four-run lead and notch an 8-6 victory over the Guardians.
Earlier in the game, Rizzo had been involved in a defensive lapse that allowed Cleveland to tie the score. A throw from pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. skipped past the first baseman, enabling the run to cross home plate. The play stemmed from a come-backer that deflected off Leiter’s foot and rolled toward first base, leading to a hurried flip to Rizzo, who seemed to catch him off guard.
Leiter described the difficulty of the play, citing the short distance between him and the first baseman, which may have obstructed the first baseman’s view.
Rizzo has been playing through lingering injuries, including two broken fingers on his glove hand and ongoing back issues. These challenges likely contributed to his reduced mobility at first base, though his clutch hitting underscored his importance to the Yankees in critical moments.
In the first inning of Game 4, Anthony Rizzo narrowly missed a double play opportunity when a line drive slipped from his glove, turning into a double and setting up a run for the Guardians. Despite the early defensive setback, the first baseman redeemed himself when it mattered most.
Facing Cleveland’s hard-throwing closer Emmanuel Clase, Rizzo led off the ninth inning with a crucial single. Jon Berti then pinch-ran for him and ultimately scored the winning run in the Yankees’ 8-6 victory. Rizzo finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate, showcasing his ability to contribute offensively despite his earlier fielding struggles.
Tommy Kahnle, who recorded the save, praised the first baseman’s resilience and mental toughness. He highlighted Rizzo’s ability to shake off mistakes and refocus, setting an example for younger teammates. Kahnle emphasized how Rizzo’s mentality of not letting errors affect his at-bats has been crucial for the team.
Just the day before, Rizzo, at 35, had entered the game as a defensive replacement for Berti but struggled with two hard-hit balls. Despite battling injuries and not being at full strength, he is determined to push through in pursuit of a World Series berth. Aware that his chances to compete for another pennant are dwindling, Rizzo’s commitment to staying on the field reflects his determination to capitalize on this opportunity.
Aaron Judge praised Rizzo’s resilience and experience, noting his ability to shake off adversity and rise to the occasion. Judge highlighted his best friend’s track record in high-stakes moments, including his pivotal role in Game 7 of the World Series with the Cubs.
“The guy has been there, done that,” the Yankees captain said. “He’s played in Game 7 of a World Series and come out on the better end [for the Cubs]. He understands there’s going to be some ups and downs throughout the game and you may … do something bad, but you’ve got the next opportunity.”
