The Yankees have made a roster move, claiming left-handed pitcher Matt Gage off waivers and designating infielder/outfielder Diego Castillo for assignment. Castillo, 26, has seen his fair share of team changes in recent years, originally signed by the Yankees before being part of various trades and claims.

Despite lacking significant power, Castillo has shown proficiency at the plate, boasting a solid ability to draw walks and maintain a respectable batting line. In his most recent Triple-A season, he demonstrated a keen eye, walking in 17.4% of plate appearances while striking out at a modest 14.2% rate. His offensive performance yielded a commendable 117 wRC+, indicating his effectiveness compared to league standards. However, his numbers at the Major League level haven’t been as impressive, with a batting line of .205/.250/.380 and a wRC+ of 71 in 284 plate appearances.

Defensively, Castillo’s versatility shines through as he’s capable of playing multiple positions across the infield and outfield, even making occasional pitching appearances. His speed adds another dimension, evident from his 13 stolen bases in Triple-A last season.

Despite his utility, Castillo finds himself in a familiar predicament this offseason, where he garners interest from teams but struggles to secure a stable roster spot. Castillo’s fate remains uncertain, with the Yankees having one week to trade him or place him on waivers. Should he clear waivers, he could remain with the Yankees as non-roster depth, given his option status and lack of MLB service time to elect free agency.

In essence, Castillo’s journey reflects the delicate balance between potential and performance in professional baseball, where players like him navigate through transactions and roster decisions in pursuit of a stable role in the league.
