The New York Yankees have made a strategic move by claiming former Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays left-handed reliever, Matt Gage, in their pursuit to fortify their bullpen, as reported recently.

Gage set to join the Yankees

With a focus on bolstering their bullpen depth, the Yankees have set their sights on Gage, who was placed on waivers by the Astros, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Gage, originally from Upstate New York, brings a promising prospect to the Yankees’ bullpen mix.

Despite limited exposure at the major league level, Gage, 30, has showcased commendable performance in the 16 games he has played, split between the Astros and the Blue Jays. Across 19 2/3 innings pitched, he has conceded only four earned runs, displaying a commendable level of reliability in his outings.

Gage’s baseball journey has seen him selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 10th round of the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft. Following his selection, he navigated through the minor league circuits before making his long-awaited major league debut with the Blue Jays in 2022.

Throughout his eight seasons in the minors, Gage has exhibited consistency, evidenced by a 3.97 ERA over 224 appearances, complemented by an impressive 557-to-180 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Such statistics underscore his potential to contribute effectively, particularly in high-pressure bullpen situations.

While Gage’s exposure to the major league scene has been limited, his inclusion in the Yankees‘ roster for the 2024 season presents an opportunity for him to showcase his abilities at a higher level. The Yankees’ pursuit of left-handed bullpen reinforcements aligns with Gage’s profile as a cost-effective option with considerable upside potential.

As the 2024 season unfolds, Gage’s trajectory in the Yankees’ bullpen remains a narrative to monitor closely, as he stands poised to potentially earn significant playing time and make his mark in the majors.
