Alexander Vargas on the radar for New York Yankees in the next MLB Draft

The New York Yankees have established themselves as a powerhouse in developing shortstop prospects in recent years, with players like Anthony Volpe and Oswald Peraza making their mark at the primary league level. As stated by The Athletic, the most known baseball team worldwide now has its sights set on another promising talent, Alexander Vargas. This player has shown significant potential and is attracting attention as he can be the following MLB Draft approaches in July. With impressive skills and standout performance in the minor leagues, Vargas has the potential to become a valuable asset for the Yankees shortly.

The media has said about the promised players that have stolen the spotlights in NCAA baseball, and surprisingly, Vargas is among the under-the-radar-prospects that anyone wasn’t commenting on; nevertheless, they were highly talented.

Why do the Yankees target Alexander Vargas?

Alexander Vargas, a 21-year-old shortstop, possesses an intriguing skill set that has caught the attention of the Yankees’ scouting department. Standing at 5-10 and weighing 148 pounds, Vargas demonstrates remarkable athleticism and agility on the field. As a switch hitter, he brings versatility, making him a valuable asset for any team.

Vargas has been evaluated across multiple aspects of his game, with scouting grades reflecting his abilities in different areas. His rates stand as follows: 55 hits and 70 runs. Plus, Alexander Vargas possesses a power rating of 40, exceptional speed with a running grade of 70, an arm strength rating of 55, and an impressive fielding skills grade of 65.

Vargas has showcased his potential at the High-A level, his ability to get on base consistently and hit for power. He has also recorded three doubles, six home runs, 16 runs batted in (RBI), and six stolen bases. These numbers have further bolstered his reputation and drawn the attention of the Yankees.

Vargas exhibits impressive bat-to-ball skills, resulting in above-average barrel percentages. He consistently makes solid contact, utilizing the entire field. His exceptional hand-eye coordination and swift footwork contribute to his success. Vargas possesses a high baseball IQ, allowing him to capitalize on his natural talents.

The Yankees’ perspective

General Manager Brian Cashman expressed the team’s confidence in Vargas by offering him a signing bonus of $2.5 million. Despite initially struggling to find his footing, Vargas has displayed considerable growth and development, both physically and skill-wise. Cashman acknowledged Vargas’ exceptional speed and lauded him as a genuine shortstop, highlighting his ability to cover ground effectively in the infield.

“We gave Alexander a $2.5 million signing bonus, and he floundered at first until (maturing physically). He can fly like the wind and is a true shortstop.” Cashman said.
