As the 2025 MLB season approaches, the New York Yankees are making a significant push to improve their roster, specifically targeting the infield as a key area for reinforcement. In the latest buzz surrounding their offseason activities, the Yankees are linked to a potential trade with the Colorado Rockies that could significantly reshape their team. At the heart of this trade proposal is infielder Ryan McMahon, a player whose defensive prowess and consistent power-hitting could provide the Yankees with a much-needed upgrade at third base.

The Yankees made an attempt for McMahon in July 2024 but the Rockies rejected their overture. They are likely to revisit that with a deal that could see them acquire McMahon in exchange for right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman and infielder Oswaldo Cabrera, along with international bonus pool money. This trade would not only address the Yankees’ infield needs but also provide a financial advantage for the Rockies, who could benefit from unloading McMahon’s significant contract obligations.

Yankees-Rockies trade framework proposed

Industry insider Drew VonScio proposes:

  • Yankees acquisition: Ryan McMahon, international bonus pool money
  • Rockies return: Marcus Stroman, Oswaldo Cabrera

“This trade makes a lot of sense for both parties,” VonScio argued. “Acquiring McMahon would allow the Yankees to lock down one of their infield positions, presumably third base. Cabrera is unlikely to see much if any, time in 2025. It would be in his best interest to play for a new team this coming season. The Rockies, on the other hand, could bolster their struggling rotation with Stroman.”

On Oct 9, 2024, the New York Yankees have announced that Oswaldo Cabrera will return to first base for Game 3 of the American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Kansas City Royals.

The proposed deal between the Yankees and the Rockies is seen as a win-win for both sides, with each team addressing critical needs. For the Yankees, the acquisition of McMahon would significantly solidify their infield, particularly at third base, where they have been searching for stability. The departure of Gleyber Torres in free agency left a gap that the team is eager to fill, and McMahon’s credentials as a reliable third baseman could offer the solution. His ability to perform consistently at the plate—hitting for power and contributing to the team’s overall offensive production—makes him an ideal fit for the Yankees.

McMahon’s track record speaks for itself: he has accumulated over 500 career starts at third base and is coming off a season where he demonstrated his abilities both offensively and defensively. His strong glove and steady bat, coupled with his recent All-Star selection, make him an attractive option for a Yankees team that aims to bolster its lineup. With McMahon on board, the Yankees could shift Jazz Chisholm into a permanent role as the everyday second baseman, further optimizing their defensive alignment.

For the Rockies, this trade presents a financial opportunity as well as a chance to improve their pitching staff. McMahon, who signed a lucrative six-year, $70 million extension in 2022, has a hefty contract that the Rockies may want to offload in favor of better roster flexibility. By acquiring Marcus Stroman, the Rockies would not only get a veteran pitcher with a proven track record but also gain depth in their rotation. Stroman, who has consistently been a reliable starter in the league, could bolster the Rockies’ pitching staff, which has been one of their weaker areas in recent seasons. Additionally, the inclusion of Oswaldo Cabrera in the trade would provide the Rockies with a versatile infielder capable of contributing at multiple positions, further adding value to the deal.

McMahon’s value proposition

The 30-year-old McMahon represents a significant upgrade for the Yankees’ infield configuration. His 2024 All-Star selection validated his consistent offensive production, highlighted by his fifth 20-homer season in six years. McMahon’s defensive versatility demonstrated through 532 career starts at third base complemented by significant experience at second and first, provides valuable lineup flexibility.

In addition to his power at the plate, McMahon’s glove work at third base has been exemplary. His defensive metrics consistently place him among the top third basemen in the league, and his ability to handle high-pressure situations in the field will be a valuable asset to the Yankees’ defense.

Moreover, McMahon’s flexibility in the lineup will allow the Yankees to move pieces around more freely. The potential for Jazz Chisholm to settle in at second base on a daily basis would be a boost to the team’s overall stability, and McMahon’s role in the batting order would bring additional power to an already formidable offense.

Following Gleyber Torres’s free agency departure, McMahon’s acquisition would address multiple roster needs. His presence would enable Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s transition to his natural second base position, creating a more cohesive infield alignment. McMahon’s contract situation, with $44 million remaining through 2027, aligns with the Yankees’ financial parameters while providing cost certainty for multiple seasons.

Colorado’s strategic benefits

The proposed trade offers the Rockies immediate rotation reinforcement through Stroman, whose experience and durability address critical pitching needs. The 33-year-old right-hander’s proven track record, including over 140 innings pitched last season, would stabilize a rotation devastated by injuries to Anthony Senzatela and German Marquez in 2024.

Cabrera’s inclusion provides Colorado with a dynamic 25-year-old talent capable of manning multiple positions. Despite limited opportunities in New York, his defensive versatility and offensive potential could flourish with regular playing time in Colorado’s expansive outfield and versatile infield roles.

Financial implications

The transaction’s financial framework accommodates both organizations’ objectives. Colorado’s exchange of McMahon’s $44 million obligation for Stroman’s shorter-term commitment maintains payroll flexibility while addressing immediate needs. The Yankees acquire a cost-controlled All-Star without compromising their luxury tax management strategy.

The inclusion of international bonus pool money enhances the Yankees’ ability to pursue additional talent through international free agency, leveraging their historically successful player development system.

The Yankees, having one of the highest payrolls in baseball, would need to account for McMahon’s remaining salary from his six-year, $70 million deal. While this is a substantial commitment, the potential return in terms of McMahon’s contributions on the field makes it a calculated risk for the Yankees. Given McMahon’s track record, the investment could pay dividends, especially considering the void left by the departure of key players such as Juan Soto.

However, there are inherent risks in making such a significant financial commitment. If McMahon’s performance were to decline or if injuries were to hinder his contributions, the Yankees could be locked into a contract that negatively impacts their payroll flexibility in the future. Therefore, the trade would require the Yankees to evaluate their financial situation carefully and ensure they are comfortable taking on McMahon’s remaining salary.

Implementation considerations

Several factors could influence the trade’s completion. Stroman’s market value and potential concerns about pitching at altitude require resolution. The Yankees must weigh Cabrera’s development trajectory against immediate competitive needs. Colorado faces organizational decisions about trading an established performer given their historical challenges attracting premier pitching talent to Coors Field.

The trade’s timing could affect both teams’ additional offseason moves, particularly regarding free agent pursuits and roster construction. International bonus pool money considerations may influence negotiation dynamics as both teams evaluate their international scouting priorities.

Long-term strategic impact

The proposed trade offers compelling benefits for both organizations. New York would strengthen their championship pursuit through infield stabilization and offensive enhancement, while Colorado addresses pitching deficiencies while adding young talent. The Yankees demonstrate continued aggressive pursuit of their 28th World Series title, while the Rockies balance competitive aspirations with resource allocation.

The acquisition of McMahon would address several key needs for the team, particularly in the infield. His blend of power, defensive capability, and leadership would significantly bolster the Yankees’ roster, giving them an edge in the highly competitive AL East.

The Rockies, meanwhile, stand to gain financial flexibility and improve their pitching depth with the addition of Marcus Stroman. This trade could mark the beginning of a new chapter for both teams as they look to build for the future.

The baseball community awaits further developments, recognizing this potential trade’s significance for both franchises’ immediate and long-term objectives. Whether McMahon ultimately dons pinstripes may depend on complex negotiations balancing multiple factors, but the Yankees’ pursuit demonstrates their unwavering commitment to roster improvement through creative solutions.
