In a strategic move, the New York Yankees have traded left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson to the Houston Astros.

In return, the Yankees have acquired minor league pitcher Kelly Austin and $750K in international signing bonus space, as per New York’s announcement.

Caleb Ferguson’s season with the Yankees

Ferguson, who was acquired by the Yankees from the Dodgers in the offseason, has had a challenging year. He posted a 5.13 ERA over 42 appearances, struggling with poor sequencing and leaving only 62.2% of baserunners stranded. Additionally, Ferguson’s season has been marred by an elevated walk rate of 10.3% and a susceptibility to home runs.

Despite these setbacks, Ferguson has maintained a respectable strikeout rate, fanning 26.5% of batters faced with an 11.5% swinging strike rate. However, his fastball velocity has dipped slightly, averaging 93.7 MPH compared to the 95-96 MPH range of previous seasons. Over five seasons with the Dodgers, Ferguson posted a 3.43 ERA, demonstrating his potential as a reliable middle reliever.

The Yankees have been light on left-handed bullpen options, with Tim Hill as their only current southpaw reliever. This trade provides the Yankees with financial flexibility, saving them approximately $2MM in salary and tax. As the trade deadline approaches, New York may look to make additional moves to bolster their bullpen, potentially targeting top rental lefty Tanner Scott or other relievers like Tanner Banks or former Yankee Justin Wilson.

Kelly Austin’s prospects

In exchange for Ferguson, the Yankees receive Kelly Austin, a 23-year-old right-handed pitcher. Austin, an undrafted free agent from UCLA, has excelled in the low minors this season. He has posted a 2.21 ERA across 36 2/3 innings, with an impressive strikeout rate of 31% and a low walk rate of 4.7%. Austin’s performance highlights his potential as a valuable future asset for the Yankees.

Ferguson is in the final year of arbitration, earning $2.4MM for the season, with approximately $800K remaining for the year. The Yankees’ move to trade Ferguson also reduces their luxury tax burden, as they are currently paying a 110% tax on salary. For the Astros, acquiring Ferguson incurs a 32% luxury tax, translating to around $250K in additional costs. Ferguson will be a free agent next offseason.

This trade marks a significant shift for both teams as the Yankees aim to enhance their financial flexibility and bullpen depth, while the Astros bolster their left-handed relief options. The next few hours leading up to the trade deadline will be crucial as both teams continue to refine their rosters for the remainder of the season.
