NEW YORK — Domingo Germán maneuvered through challenges for six innings, while Willie Calhoun‘s decisive home run broke the tie, leading the New York Yankees to a 3-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night and leveling their three-game weekend series.

Despite consistently having baserunners against Germán and the Yankees‘ bullpen, the Boston Red Sox failed to capitalize, going 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position and leaving a total of 11 runners on base throughout the game.

Germán effectively closed out the second inning by retiring Kiké Hernandez with runners at the corners, and he managed to escape trouble again in the third when Rafael Devers’ fly ball fell short of the left-field wall, leaving Justin Turner stranded at third base.

In the fourth inning, Gleyber Torres provided the Yankees with the go-ahead run by launching a home run off Tanner Houck (3-6).

Rafael Devers, who had struggled with a 3-for-24 record against Germán, continued his strong performance by hitting a home run for the second consecutive night. His sixth-inning drive sailed into the netting above Monument Park, leveling the score.

In the bottom half of the inning, Calhoun came through with a home run, his fifth of the season. Filling in for the injured Aaron Judge, Calhoun has been in impressive form, boasting a batting average of .310 and contributing eight RBIs in his past 12 games.

In the seventh inning, Kyle Higashioka came up with a clutch RBI single against Josh Wickowski.

Germán (4-3) yielded six hits and recorded five strikeouts.

In the seventh inning, Wandy Peralta walked two batters but managed to retire Devers on a groundout, leaving two runners stranded. Devers’s struggles against the left-hander continued as he remained 0 for 10 against him.

In the eighth inning, Tommy Kahnle hit Adam Duvall with a pitch, putting him on base. Later, Christian Arroyo hit a fly ball to the center-field wall for the second out.

In the ninth inning, Clay Holmes successfully navigated around a single by Alex Verdugo, securing his eighth save in ten opportunities.

Against Boston, New York has emerged victorious in 14 of their previous 17 home games.

Houck yielded two runs and only three hits in a span of six innings, leading to the Red Sox (32-33) falling back below the .500 mark with their sixth loss in the last eight games. He impressively retired the initial nine batters he faced, registering six strikeouts, until Torres connected for a home run. It marked the first home run Houck conceded to a right-handed batter in 306 appearances since José Abreu went deep on September 10, 2021.

In the final game of the series on Sunday night, it will be Yankees’ right-handed pitcher Clarke Schmidt (2-6, 4.96 ERA) facing off against Red Sox’s right-handed pitcher Brayan Bello (3-4, 3.97 ERA). Schmidt has been performing well recently, having allowed three runs or less in his previous three starts. On the other hand, Bello has faced three consecutive losses despite maintaining a solid 3.18 ERA during that stretch.
