New York Yankees’ star pitcher Gerrit Cole faces a setback as he is set to miss a significant chunk of the upcoming season. Important outlets reveal that Cole will be sidelined for at least one to two months, prompting a visit to renowned sports surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.

According to the NY Post, the initial assessments by Yankees medical staff showed no apparent tear in Gerrit Cole’s ulnar collateral ligament. However, concerns persist, prompting ElAttrache to recommend an in-person evaluation. Although there’s optimism for a return in May or early June, Cole’s absence from the opening games is certain.
Brendan Kuty from The Athletic reports that sources indicate Gerrit Cole’s MRI revealed no tear but did show inflammation and soreness in his elbow. Cole sought further examination to understand the underlying issue. While not ideal, it’s relatively positive news for the Yankees.

Not the worst news for the Yankees.
Despite hopeful readings earlier, ElAttrache’s recommendation for further testing has escalated worries. Yankees manager Aaron Boone has ruled out Gerrit Cole’s presence on Opening Day, indicating a prolonged absence. Cole’s recovery journey involves addressing swelling and inflammation before gradually regaining pitching form.

While Gerrit Cole showcased his usual prowess during spring training, his recovery from the recent setback has proven challenging. What began with a twinge in his elbow led to ongoing examinations, culminating in the upcoming consultation with ElAttrache.
Comparisons to former Yankees pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, who managed to perform despite a weakened elbow ligament, highlight the unpredictability of such injuries. Gerrit Cole’s durability has been a cornerstone for the Yankees since his 2020 signing, making his absence a significant loss for the team.
