The New York Yankees made headlines by securing ace left-hander Max Fried on an eight-year, $218 million contract—the largest guaranteed deal ever awarded to a left-handed pitcher. While this acquisition strengthens the Yankees’ rotation, it has also sparked concerns among analysts due to Max Fried’s recent injury history.

According to a CBS report, while Max Fried’s production has been steady, his health record raises red flags. He has endured forearm strains in each of the past two seasons—a concerning trend given the well-documented link between forearm injuries and Tommy John surgery. Following his most recent injury, Fried experienced noticeable declines in control, posting 4.4 walks per nine innings over six August starts in 2024. His swinging-strike rate also dipped to a career-low 10.2%.

Given these issues, experts are closely watching the outcome of Fried’s physical examination, a standard procedure before any free-agent deal is finalized. If the Yankees detect any lingering health concerns, they could potentially reconsider the record-breaking contract.

Why Max Fried fits the Yankees’ mold

Max Fried’s skill set aligns well with Yankee Stadium’s unique dimensions. As a ground-ball specialist, he thrives in a ballpark notorious for its short right-field porch. Over the past five seasons, he has maintained an exceptional 2.81 ERA, with his 3.25 ERA in 2024 being the highest during that period. His ability to induce grounders, combined with elite control when fully healthy, makes him a potentially dominant presence in the Yankees’ rotation.

Max Fried’s upcoming physical could restore or diminish confidence in drafting him for the 2025 season. Should the Yankees’ medical staff give him a clean bill of health, he could easily rank as a top-15 starting pitcher, bolstered by a strong Yankees lineup that could translate to more wins. Conversely, any detected issues could cause a significant reevaluation of his fantasy baseball value.

Yankees’ rotation puzzle: Who will be the odd man out

Adding Fried creates a rotation logjam for the Yankees. With seven starting pitchers for just five rotation spots, competition among Luis Gil, Marcus Stroman, and Clarke Schmidt is inevitable. Many speculate that Schmidt, coming off a career-best 2.85 ERA and 9.8 K/9 over 16 starts, could be the odd man out—though his value as rotation depth should not be overlooked.

The Yankees could leverage their pitching depth in trade talks, especially if they look to strengthen other roster areas ahead of the season. There are already talks of the Yankees shipping Marcus Stroman and Nestor Cortes.

The Yankees’ gamble on Max Fried could redefine their 2025 season—either by elevating their rotation to one of the league’s best or by exposing the risk that comes with committing $218 million to a pitcher with recent injury concerns. As the baseball world waits for Fried’s medical results, the stakes couldn’t be higher for a franchise determined to reclaim its championship pedigree.
