New York Yankees 8, Baltimore Orioles 3

BALTIMORE — Aaron Judge smashed a home run and hit two singles during his second game back from the injured list. The New York Yankees capitalized on his impressive comeback as they secured an 8-3 victory against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night.

Adding to the Yankees’ distinctiveness, Giancarlo Stanton and Kyle Higashioka also blasted home runs. Their powerful hits contributed to the early exit of Orioles’ struggling starter Tyler Wells (7-6) in the third inning. Furthermore, in a remarkable display of determination, Isiah Kiner-Falefa engaged in a 10-pitch battle and eventually sealed the sixth inning with a spectacular three-run double, expanding the lead to 8-3.

Aaron Judge, back in action after recovering from a toe injury that had kept him out since early June, displayed remarkable prowess with three walks and three hits in nine plate appearances since his return on Friday.

The Orioles had their own moment of brilliance when Ryan Mountcastle homered. However, Clarke Schmidt (7-6) rose to the occasion, enduring five tough innings on the mound for the Yankees. The New York bullpen then took charge, securing a successful outcome for the team.

The Orioles continued to maintain their 1 1/2-game lead over Tampa Bay in the AL East, while the Yankees found themselves trailing by 3 1/2 games in the race for the final two wild card spots in the American League, behind both Toronto and Houston.

During Friday night’s game, Judge demonstrated his discipline at the plate, drawing three walks. However, despite his efforts, the Yankees faced a disappointing 1-0 loss due to Baltimore’s Anthony Santander’s ninth-inning homer. Nevertheless, the team bounced back the following night with an entirely different approach, showcasing relentless determination on offense.

With remarkable power, Stanton launched a first-inning drive that effortlessly cleared the towering left-field wall at Camden Yards. The Orioles fought back in the second inning when Mountcastle stepped up and tied the game. Soon after, Baltimore edged ahead 2-1 courtesy of an RBI infield single delivered by Ramón Urías. However, their lead was short-lived.

Judge, exhibiting his own brand of dominance, smashed a two-run shot that soared a whopping 442 feet to center field in the third inning. Not to be outdone, Gleyber Torres contributed with a sacrifice fly in the following inning, further extending the Yankees’ advantage.

In the fifth inning, Santander managed to close the gap to 4-3 with an RBI groundout, adding some tension to the game. However, it was in the sixth inning when New York truly broke the contest wide open. Cole Irvin, who had been performing well until then, faltered and allowed a leadoff homer to Higashioka, marking the catcher’s third hit of the night. Following that, Judge, Stanton, and Anthony Rizzo hit consecutive one-out singles, setting the stage for an explosive inning.

Bryan Baker came in to relieve Irvin and showed great promise by striking out DJ LeMahieu, but Kiner-Falefa was up to the challenge. In an intense at-bat that saw him fouling off five pitches, Kiner-Falefa finally delivered a decisive blow with a line drive to left, clearing the bases and significantly padding the Yankees’ lead.

Entering the game with an impressive major league-leading WHIP of 0.99, Wells seemed like a formidable opponent. However, the Yankees managed to get the better of him, as he allowed three runs, three hits, and three walks in just 2 2/3 innings. This marked his third start since the All-Star break, and unfortunately, he’s struggled to last more than nine innings in those three games combined.
