The offseason buzz around Major League Baseball continues to grow, and one of the most intriguing narratives is the potential return of former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Marcus Stroman to his old stomping grounds. Reports suggest the New York Yankees have listed Stroman as a trade candidate, sparking speculation that the Blue Jays, currently in the market for a starting pitcher, might express interest in reacquiring their former star.

Stroman’s journey from Blue Jays ace to Yankees trade bait

Marcus Stroman, a household name for Blue Jays fans, was a standout performer during his time in Toronto. Known for his electric personality and impressive performances, the pitcher peaked in 2019 before being traded to the New York Mets in a move that surprised many. After the trade, the Blue Jays entered a rebuilding phase, only to make a return to the playoffs in the shortened 2020 season.

Since then, Stroman has experienced a mixed trajectory. After signing with the New York Yankees, he had an underwhelming 2023 season, posting a 4.33 ERA with 113 strikeouts over 154.2 innings. Despite the down year, his previous track record and competitiveness make him an appealing target for teams looking to bolster their rotation.

Yankees ready to trade Stroman?

According to MLB insider Mark Feinsand, Stroman has emerged as a potential trade candidate for the Yankees. While the team isn’t actively shopping for him, they are reportedly open to listening to offers. This opens the door for interested teams like the Blue Jays to make a move if the Yankees’ asking price aligns with their needs.

Feinsand included the Yankees pitcher in a list of one trade candidate from each MLB team, writing, “There’s been no indication that the Yankees are actively trying to trade Stroman, but he fits the profile of a player who could generate interest on the market.”

Blue Jays need Stroman?

The Blue Jays are actively seeking reinforcements for their starting rotation this offseason. Their rumored interest in high-profile pitchers like Max Fried and Corbin Burnes reflects their ambition, but competition for these top-tier talents is fierce. With multiple teams vying for the services of Fried and Burnes, Toronto may need to explore alternative options—and Stroman could fit the bill.

Although Stroman’s performance dipped last season, he still presents a relatively low-risk option for the Blue Jays. Entering the final year of his contract, he wouldn’t require a long-term financial commitment. If things don’t pan out, the team could release him into free agency next offseason. This flexibility could appeal to the Blue Jays as they aim to build a strong rotation while keeping their future payroll in check.

A potential Stroman return to Toronto would carry an emotional element for fans who remember his years as one of the team’s most dynamic players. From his dominant mound presence to his unforgettable performances during Toronto’s playoff runs, Stroman left a significant mark on the franchise. While his Yankees stint has been less than stellar, a change of scenery and a return to familiar territory could rejuvenate the veteran pitcher.

Time is of the essence for the Blue Jays’ front office. The top-tier pitchers on the market are unlikely to stay available for long, and the Blue Jays need to act decisively to avoid being left behind. Whether they pursue Stroman, Fried, Burnes, or another option, one thing is clear: the team cannot afford to delay their decision-making.

Stroman, with his experience and history in Toronto, could be a sensible and affordable fallback if the team misses out on their top targets. However, it remains to be seen if the Yankees’ demands align with the Blue Jays’ willingness to part with prospects or other assets.

Is a trade possible?

The potential reunion of Marcus Stroman and the Toronto Blue Jays is a storyline to watch as the offseason unfolds. For Stroman, it could represent an opportunity to reignite his career in a city where he once thrived. For the Blue Jays, it offers a chance to solidify their rotation without committing to a long-term deal.

As teams continue to jockey for position in the trade and free-agent markets, the Yankees’ openness to trading Stroman adds another layer of intrigue to the offseason drama. Whether Toronto seizes the opportunity or looks elsewhere, one thing is certain: the stakes are high, and the time to act is now.
