The Yankees have signed Roc Riggio and Brian Hendry both players have been playing at Oklahoma State Cowboys. As the 2023 MLB Draft concluded, the Cowboys found themselves facing a significant challenge.

After securing lucrative contracts, all seven of the Cowboys’ selected players were en route to the big leagues, setting Coach Josh Holliday with the challenge of rebuilding the roster for the upcoming Big 12 baseball season. Notably, two of the players, Roc Riggio, the standout second baseman, and Brian Henry, opted to sign with the Yankees. Riggio’s decision garnered significant attention as he made his move to the professional level.

Who is Roc Riggio?

Known for his electrifying style of play, Riggio was chosen with pick No. 129 in the draft, with a slotted value of $506,800. However, he surpassed expectations by securing an impressive signing bonus of $693,000 from the New York Yankees.

The decision to invest in Riggio seemed justified, given his impressive statistics at Oklahoma State, including a .335 batting average, 17 doubles, 3 triples, 18 home runs, 66 runs scored, and 61 RBIs. The young player’s potential seemed to fit well with the Yankees, and he was undoubtedly a valuable addition to their roster.

Another player from the Cowboys roster also found new opportunities in the Bronx. Brian Hendry, a pitcher, was chosen by the New York Yankees with pick No. 312, highlighting the team’s keen interest in Oklahoma State talent.

With an “Empire State of Mind,” the Yankees’ plan for rebuilding their roster was comprehensive and forward-thinking. They aimed to create a winning culture, not just at the major league level, but throughout their entire organization. By investing in young and promising players, strategically drafting talent, and nurturing their prospects in the minor leagues, the Yankees were setting themselves up for a bright and competitive future in both the Major League Baseball and Minor League Baseball circuits. As fans eagerly awaited the start of the 2023-24 season, the excitement surrounding the Yankees’ rebuilding efforts was palpable, and everyone had their eyes on the rising stars who would soon don the iconic pinstripes.
