The New York Yankees considered bringing up a third catcher last Tuesday due to Austin Wells’ sore hand, according to Greg Joyce of the New York Post. However, after Wells took swings today, manager Aaron Boone expects him to return to the lineup on Friday against the Cubs.
Austin Wells remained out of the lineup for the third game against the Rangers, with Jazz Chisholm hitting cleanup.
If the rumors are confirmed, Austin Wells is set to start alongside Luis Gil, who has been rehabbing and is expected to be available as a starter this upcoming Friday.
Austin Wells’ injury details
Last Tuesday, Austin Wells was left out of the Yankees lineup after being hit on Monday. The rookie catcher was struck in the right hand by a 95-mph fastball from Rangers reliever Chase Anderson during the Yankees’ five-run sixth inning. Wells dropped to one knee outside the batter’s box, raising concerns of a potential fracture that could sideline him for several weeks, according to NJ.com. However, it turned out to be a scare, with no serious injury.
