Despite swirling rumors about the Yankees talking to Hector Neris, MLB insider Jack Curry threw a curveball on YES Network, revealing that New York might look to familiar faces within their own organization for bullpen reinforcements. He mentioned Wandy Peralta and Keynan Middleton as potential reunion candidates while playing down speculation about Neris.
Did the Yankees’ negotiations with Neris fail?
Curry acknowledged Neris’ availability in the market and his ties to the Yankees but hinted that negotiations might not be as definite as reports suggest. He stressed the fluid nature of the situation, noting that a single text, phone call, or change in demands could reshape the entire landscape.
Instead, Curry pointed toward a possible return for Peralta or Middleton. Both pitchers bring enticing familiarity and recent success. Peralta has been a reliable presence for the Yankees over the past three years, posting a 2.83 ERA in 63 appearances during the 2023 season before a minor left triceps injury temporarily sidelined him. Middleton, acquired at the trade deadline, displayed promising potential in his limited 13 1/3 innings, conceding only one earned run while striking out 17 batters before a shoulder injury affected his September performance.
With their established track records and familiarity within the system, Peralta and Middleton could emerge as more attractive options than Neris for the Yankees’ bullpen puzzle. Ultimately, negotiations in the offseason remain speculative, and only time will reveal which pitchers will be donning the pinstripes in relief roles come Opening Day.
