In a bizarre sequence on Wednesday night, the Washington Nationals were caught in a rare double play against the New York Yankees, an event that left both teams and fans bewildered. The unusual play unfolded in the bottom of the eighth inning, with runners on first and second and no outs, when Jose Tena launched a deep fly ball off the center field wall, just beyond the reach of Aaron Judge. The Yankees’ center fielder swiftly relayed the ball to shortstop Anthony Volpe, sparking a chaotic chain of events.
Confusion set in when ex-Yankees player Joey Gallo, the lead runner, hesitated near third base, while Juan Yepez, the trailing runner, arrived at the same spot. The resulting miscommunication saw both runners caught in separate rundowns. The ball was tossed back and forth between the Yankees’ catcher and the first baseman, who had moved to cover second base. Eventually, third baseman Jazz Chisholm tagged out Gallo near third.
The Nationals still had a chance to minimize the damage, potentially keeping two runners on with just one out. However, Tena’s ill-timed attempt to advance from first base added to the mess. Chisholm capitalized on the mistake, throwing to second baseman Gleyber Torres, who tagged out Tena as he scrambled back toward the bag. This complex 8-6-2-3-2-5-4 double play left the Nationals with a runner on second and two outs.
The baserunning blunder, widely seen as one of the most embarrassing of the season, squandered a critical scoring opportunity for the Nationals. Despite the eighth-inning mishap, Washington held on to their lead, securing a 5-2 win over the Yankees.
