ANAHEIM, Calif. — The New York Yankees have 13 of their players struggling with injuries and they can’t play, according to their manager Aaron Boone. It was on Tuesday afternoon at Angel Stadium when Boone spoke about his players on the injured list while sitting in the visitor’s dugout.
Boone is right and 13 of the team’s 40 players are currently on the injured list. Many players are getting better after their injuries and one is on paternity leave right now.
However, Boone wasn’t always up-to-date. Michael King’s right elbow fracture hasn’t been re-imaged. Aroldis Chapman’s leg infection persists after he had a tattoo. Boone updated the 10 players mentioned Tuesday afternoon.
Here are twelve different injury reports and updates for fans beyond Boone’s press meet as a manager at The Big A.
Jose Trevino
A pitch hit Trevino’s right foot in Oakland on Friday night. However, x-rays of his right toe didn’t indicate any serious injury or fracture. He was out only for two games and set to return to the lineup against the Angels on Monday.
So, why didn’t Trevino join the Tuesday line-up even after Boone made it clear that his foot is improving?
Boon said:
“Jose actually came in a little bit better today. I think he was beat up dealing with it last night a little bit. That’s my sense. Hopefully we’ll have him in there tomorrow and then obviously the off day [on Thursday]. I think it affected him a little bit last night.”
Harrison Bader
Jordan Montgomery has started his pitching career for the Cardinals and Harrison Bader is also inching closer to his first game for the Yankees.
Bader hasn’t played since June 26 after being acquired from the Cardinals in the Montgomery trade before this month’s deadline. Soon after his arrival, the outfielder was put on a 60-day injured list citing plantar fasciitis under his right foot.
Boone expected Bader to start a rehab assignment in 10 days. According to him, Bader has started hitting off a tee and is continuing his running, which is progressing smoothly.
Luis Severino
As informed by Boone, Severino would start his rehab program in 2 to 3 days, the latest by Friday. Right now, it is not clear if the pitcher will start in the game against the Tampa Tarpons or wait for his pitch against any other team. The number of rehab outings the pitcher needs is subject to how much the team needs him to build his form and play for the remaining few months of the season.
As Boone told:
“He’ll probably go two [innings] and 35 [pitches] his first time out and then progress from there. I don’t know his exact date of when he’s eligible and how it times up with his five day and getting his next one. He’ll probably get three I would think, but we’ll see.”
Boone also said that the Yankees are planning to use Severino first in a “piggyback role” on his return to active duty to help him ease back into things. The player had a strain in his right lat.
Matt Carpenter
The player broke his left foot on August 8 in Seattle when he stepped on a pitch with his back foot. Carpenter will probably get new X-rays soon, but Boone had made it clear that there were no plans for new imaging tests of the player yet.
According to Boone:
“I know he’s back in Texas right now because he can do all his stuff while we’re [on a road trip]. But I don’t know of any plans to get another x-ray.”
Boone says that Carpenter doesn’t have any baseball plans at the moment either.
Boone was not sure if the Yankees had any baseball plans for Carpenter at the moment.
Nestor Cortes
Cortes is doing well while he was put on the injured list for two weeks following a left groin strain. The southpaw was injured on August 25.
The left-handed pitcher is likely to throw a bullpen on Wednesday in Anaheim. Cortes should return from the injury list after 15 days and rejoin the rotation during New York’s first homestand in September.
Zack Britton
Britton has already completed his second rehab program following Tommy John’s surgery. The pitcher got injured after he had hurt his glute and is still recovering.
Britton would throw a bullpen on Thursday to assess his fitness. If given green light, he could return to games and pitch again on Saturday, Boone informed on Tuesday.
Scott Effross
Boone said that Effross could “start his throwing program any day now, as he is getting better from a right shoulder strain.” Back on August 22, the righty pitcher was put on the injured list.
According to Boone:
“I think he’s at 10 days right now. So, it’s probably that same build-up [once he starts throwing].”
Albert Abreu
Boone says that Abreu is “a couple of days behind Effross” in starting to throw. On August 21, the right-hander was put off the active roster for 15 days and declared injured after he had a right elbow swelling.
Miguel Castro
The pitcher has been out of action since July 16 because of a strain affecting his shoulder. Castro was put on the injured list for 60 days on August 1.
The player was getting back on the mound for bullpens and building up his throwing program this month. However, he had a small setback that will change his schedule going forward.
Boone said:
“We’re slowing him down a little bit just because he’s had a little heaviness [in his arm] but he’s doing fine.”
Marwin Gonzalez
Boone does not know when Gonzalez will return from paternity leave. Tim Locastro, an outfielder, has already replaced Gonzalez on the active roster in Anaheim.
