New York Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake was ejected from Thursday night’s game after a heated argument over balls and strikes with home plate umpire Edwin Moscoso.
The incident took place in the top of the eighth inning when Yankees catcher Jose Trevino, pinch-hitting with two runners on base and one out, faced a contentious call. With the team trailing 5-3, Trevino had worked a 3-0 count before a high pitch was erroneously called a strike, prolonging his at-bat instead of granting him a walk.
Trevino ultimately struck out looking on another debatable call, though this pitch was closer to the strike zone. Blake’s ejection followed this at-bat, as he vociferously challenged the umpire’s decisions.
The disputed calls potentially influenced the inning’s progression and possibly the game’s outcome. While Trevino could have attempted to foul off the 3-2 pitch, Moscoso’s initial incorrect call had already significantly impacted the at-bat and the Yankees’ scoring opportunity.
Yankees fans slam umpire for tossing out Matt Blake
Blake’s outburst marked his inaugural ejection of the 2024 campaign and his first since the previous May. The incident echoed a similar clash from the 2023 season when Moscoso sent Aaron Boone packing during a Yankees-Orioles showdown.
The Bronx faithful rallied behind their pitching coach, with social media ablaze with support. One fan’s tweet captured the sentiment: “These umps couldn’t call a cab, let alone a game.”
The contentious strikeout call against Trevino led to a bases-loaded scenario. Despite Volpe drawing a walk, Grisham’s lazy fly to left field left the bags full, amplifying the Yankees’ frustration.
This pivotal moment underscored the Bombers’ ongoing struggles to capitalize on scoring opportunities. The 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Rays extended their losing skid, marking their third consecutive series loss and eighth straight game without tasting victory.
The controversy and subsequent loss only served to deepen the Yankees’ early-season woes, leaving fans and management alike searching for answers as the team’s slump persisted.
