New York Yankees 0, Tampa Bay Rays 4

The New York Yankees were blanked by Ryan Yarbrough and the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday, the first time that had happened to them since 2016.

After losing to the Boston Red Sox 3-0 on Sunday, New York’s best pitcher, Gerrit Cole, didn’t get any run support. The only run he gave up was because Aaron Hicks made a mistake in center field.

The AL East leaders were shut out for the fourth time in nine games, and after starting the season 64-28, they are now 8-16 since the All-Star break.

Since the Yankees were shut out by the Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays on September 22-24, 2016, they hadn’t gone scoreless in consecutive games.

In the fourth inning, David Peralta hit a fly ball that Hicks couldn’t catch because he got turned around on the warning track. This led to a triple. Isaac Paredes then hit a single off of Cole (9-5), to give the Rays a 1-0 lead. This was enough for them to win their third game in a row.

In the ninth inning, Jose Siri’s RBI single and Yandy Daz’s two-run single helped Tampa Bay score three more runs.

In six innings, Cole gave up one run and five hits. He got six outs, walked two, and for the 11th time this season, he gave up one run or less.

Hicks had the bases loaded in the fourth inning, but he grounded out to Yarbrough, who started a 1-2-3 double play.

After Yarbrough threw 58 pitches, Ryan Thompson got the next five outs. In the eighth, he got Aaron Judge to hit into a double play. Before the Rays scored, Brooks Raley struck out Anthony Rizzo, and Jason Adam pitched the ninth.

On Tuesday, LHP Jeffrey Springs of Tampa Bay (4-3, 2.56 ERA) goes up against LHP Nestor Cortes of New York (9-3, 2.67).
