The Yankees’ ace, Gerrit Cole, showcased his mastery on the mound with 11 strikeouts, marking his 24th double-digit strikeout game since joining the team. However, the bullpen’s catastrophic performance overshadowed his brilliance. In the rubber match of their first series after the All-Star break, the Yankees had a promising chance to secure a victory against the National League’s worst team, thanks to Cole’s impressive display and some defensive lapses by the Colorado Rockies.
Unfortunately, the bullpen faltered in both the eighth and eleventh innings, resulting in a devastating loss.
The Yankees’ current state is nothing short of a disaster. Although Cole faced some trouble in the thin Colorado air early on, giving up a deep opposite-field fly to Michael Toglia for a home run, he quickly settled in and allowed only one more hit, a single, in his six innings of work. Around that lone hit, Cole struck out 9 of the next 10 Rockies batters. His dominant performance earned him 11 strikeouts, surpassing Ron Guidry for the franchise record of the most double-digit strikeout games as a Yankee.
The Yankees had their chance to take control of the game. In the next half-inning after the Rockies took the lead, they loaded the bases with two outs but failed to capitalize as Anthony Rizzo’s at-bat ended in a soft flyout. Similarly, in the fifth inning, they had a runner on third with one out but couldn’t bring him home as Giancarlo Stanton flew out weakly on the first pitch. Despite their missed opportunities, the Yankees managed to grab a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning. A series of groundball singles and an errant throw by the Rockies’ third baseman allowed the Yankees to score two runs.
Anthony Volpe’s RBI single, coupled with IKF’s aggressive baserunning, put the Yankees ahead. With Cole’s excellent outing and the lead in hand, the Yankees looked poised for victory. However, the bullpen’s struggles came to light in the eighth inning. Tommy Kahnle, who had not allowed a run all season, ran into trouble, surrendering a walk and two hits before being replaced with the bases loaded and two outs. Clay Holmes entered the game, but his sinker lacked its usual effectiveness, resulting in a crucial home run that tied the score.
The game went into extra innings with the Rockies leading 5-3. The Yankees managed to tie the game in the ninth inning when a defensive mishap by the Rockies allowed a run to score. However, they failed to capitalize fully, and the game continued into the 11th inning.

In the top half of the 11th, the Yankees took a 7-5 lead with an RBI single from Cabrera and a crucial insurance run driven in by Peraza. However, their hopes were quickly dashed as the bullpen struggled once again. Nick Ramirez, an unexpected choice, gave up a two-run homer to Nolan Jones.
Eventually, Ron Marinaccio took the mound but surrendered a walk-off home run to Alan Trejo, sealing the victory for the Rockies. The Yankees’ poor performance raises concerns about their direction heading towards the trade deadline. Unless they improve, they risk becoming sellers in the market. The bullpen’s recent struggles, although partly excusable due to the challenging pitching conditions at Coors Field, are cause for alarm.
Additionally, despite scoring seven runs, the Yankees were unable to generate any extra-base hits. The Yankees will have the opportunity to regroup in their upcoming game against the Angels in Anaheim. However, their starting pitcher, Luis Severino, has been inconsistent lately. The game is scheduled for tomorrow at 9:38 pm ET, and it will be an important test for the team.

I try to be optimistic but this team is tainted it needs to bring up Peraza put Donaldson on the 60day IL. Figure out to use the bullpen. Too many defeats snatched from the jaws of victory 😡🤬 watching this team is bad for my health. I’m going to August 5th game vs The Assholes and at this point getting the Jerry Garcia bobblehead will probably be the highlight of that game. We’re NOT getting Soto or Ohtani or Arenado and why would they want to come here 🤦🏻💀 ijs
