The New York Yankees had a terrible weekend against the top team in the majors. The Oakland Athletics, on the other hand, enjoyed their best weekend of the season. After one of their most depressing losses of an average season, the Yankees will try to stay above .500 when they play the Athletics on Monday night. The Athletics just won their first series.

The Yankees would rather not go 18-18, as that would be their second .500 record in the month. They were 15-15 after blowing a two-run lead over Cleveland at home on May 1.

After winning the last two games against the Guardians, the Yankees’ first series with the Tampa Bay Rays was made up of two one-run losses and a 3-2 win.

“Difficult, but we start a big homestand tomorrow and we got to move on from it,” manager Aaron Boone said.

In the past 16 games, the Yankees only managed to score more than five runs on two occasions. Oakland won the first two games of a three-game set at Kansas City by scoring 17 runs. On Sunday, they only got four hits and had two at-bats with runners on base. During their first winning streak of the season, the A’s had a total of 26 hits and 26 at-bats with runners in scoring position.

Nestor Cortes (3-2, 4.91 ERA), who just had the worst start of his career and has given up 14 runs in his last three starts, will start for the Yankees in the first game of the series. Cortes had to wait his turn because he had strep throat. He is starting for the first time since April 30, when he gave up seven runs and five hits, including three home runs, in 4 2/3 innings during a 15-2 loss at Texas.

In four games against Oakland, Cortes is 0-1 and has a 4.38 earned run average (ERA). In his only start against the A’s, on August 28, 2021, Cortes gave up three runs over 5 1/3 innings and the team lost 3-2 on the road.

With a 3-0 record and a 2.05 ERA in seven games (two starts) before being moved by the Yankees to Oakland in exchange for Frankie Montas at the 2022 trade deadline, JP Sears (0-2, 5.06) takes the mound for Oakland.

Sears just had his best start of the season, in which he gave up four hits and no runs in six innings. However, Oakland’s bench gave up five runs in the 10th inning of Wednesday’s 7-2 loss to Seattle.

“Outstanding job by Sears,” Oakland manager Mark Kotsay said. “Unfortunately, the back end and the bullpen just haven’t been able to close it down.”

Yankees Injured List: Oswald Peraza, Aaron Judge, Lou Trivino, Giancarlo Stanton, Jonathan Loaisiga, Tommy Kahnle, Josh Donaldson, Frankie Montas, Carlos Rodon, Luis Severino, Luis Gil, Scott Effross, Ben Rortvedt.
