New York — Yankees fans received a fresh spark of intrigue this week when MLB insider Jon Heyman highlighted a notable connection between Mets star Pete Alonso and Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner. Writing in the New York Post on August 14, Heyman pointed out the relationship as a detail worth monitoring, hinting it could prove significant if Alonso tests free agency.

Alonso, one of the most recognizable power hitters in baseball, has long been the face of the Mets lineup. Yet his future beyond the current contract has been a consistent topic of conversation across New York. Heyman’s mention of the Steinbrenner link gave new energy to speculation about the Yankees possibly stepping in if circumstances shift.

Alonso’s Mets deal leaves door ajar

Earlier this year, Pete Alonso and the Mets reached a two-year, $54 million contract agreement in February 2025. The deal included a $10 million signing bonus and a $20 million salary for the current season. The heart of it, though, is the $24 million player option for 2026, which grants Alonso the ability to reenter the market should he seek a longer or more lucrative deal.

That structure left Alonso with control of his future while staying in Queens. It also meant leaving money on the table. Reports confirmed he turned down a three-year, $71 million offer from the Toronto Blue Jays to remain with the Mets. Incentives further sweetened the deal. Alonso can earn a $200,000 bonus for winning MVP, $150,000 for finishing second, $50,000 for finishing third, $100,000 for honors such as Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, All-MLB or All-Star, and $150,000 if he is named World Series MVP.

The arrangement underscores Alonso’s commitment to the Mets while simultaneously keeping his options open. And it is that balance that keeps Yankees speculation alive.

Yankees angle gains attention

While Alonso’s contract seems secure, Heyman’s column revived chatter about the Yankees potentially finding themselves in the picture. The key factor, according to Heyman, lies in what happens with Mets offseason plans. If the Mets pursue a marquee free agent such as Cody Bellinger, roster dynamics could shift and open the door for unexpected movement.

Alonso’s off-field connection to Steinbrenner is not considered a negotiating factor today, but history shows that relationships and familiarity can sometimes influence long-term outcomes. The Yankees have been tied to several first base options in recent years, and Alonso’s established power bat would be an instant fit in their lineup if circumstances changed.

Bellinger factor in play

The cross-town rivalry may add another twist this winter. Reports from Pinstripes Nation on August 15 noted that the Mets are expected to make a serious push for Cody Bellinger in free agency after the season. Bellinger, who signed a short-term deal with the Yankees to rebuild his value, could emerge as one of the market’s most sought-after bats.

If the Mets succeed in luring Bellinger away from the Bronx, the ripple effects could be significant. Such a move would give the Mets a new centerpiece while creating a potential opening for the Yankees at first base or designated hitter. That is where Alonso enters the conversation.

The idea of Bellinger in Queens paired with Alonso in the Bronx would not only shift the balance of power in New York baseball but also underline the rivalry’s intensity. Heyman’s highlighting of Alonso’s Steinbrenner tie only sharpens the intrigue.

Alonso’s power remains unmatched

Alonso’s reputation speaks for itself. Since arriving in 2019, he has established himself as one of the league’s premier power hitters, winning Rookie of the Year and setting a rookie record with 53 home runs. He is also a two-time Home Run Derby champion, with a track record of producing in the biggest moments.

Comparisons with Bellinger, who won the 2019 National League MVP, often surface when evaluating potential free agent classes. According to FantasyPros’ player tracker, Alonso remains the more consistent power threat, while Bellinger offers defensive flexibility in the outfield and first base. For the Yankees, who have juggled health questions and lineup gaps, Alonso’s raw home run ability would be a natural fit if the Mets reshuffle their roster with Bellinger.

A connection worth watching

Heyman’s article did not suggest imminent negotiations or active pursuit by the Yankees. But by noting the Steinbrenner connection, the respected insider reminded fans that relationships and familiarity can sometimes influence future decisions. For a franchise like the Yankees, who never shy away from elite talent, such ties can prove meaningful if market conditions align.

Alonso’s deal gives him leverage, and the Mets’ possible chase of Bellinger ensures more headlines are on the way. For Yankees followers, it is a scenario to monitor as general manager Brian Cashman evaluates his options heading into 2026.

A rivalry fueled by uncertainty

The Yankees’ own situation adds another layer. Injuries have left their roster in flux, and a lack of consistent production at first base remains a concern. While Anthony Rizzo’s long Yankees tenure ended earlier this season, his departure has left a hole that has yet to be permanently filled.

That gap, paired with the possibility of losing Bellinger to the Mets, positions Alonso as a potential solution. Should the Mets choose to invest heavily in Bellinger, it could complicate long-term planning for Alonso and force him to weigh his future outside Queens.

What comes next

For now, Alonso remains central to the Mets’ 2025 postseason chase. His performance, health, and decision on the 2026 player option will determine how the next chapter unfolds. But Heyman’s focus on his Steinbrenner link has ensured the Yankees’ name will linger in speculation.

If the Mets do land Bellinger this winter, Yankees fans may look at Alonso as more than just a rival star across town. He could become one of the most talked-about potential solutions in pinstripes.

As always in New York baseball, the rivalry is not confined to the field. With two stars, two franchises, and one city spotlight, the Alonso storyline is one that will not fade.
