New York Yankees utility player Jon Berti was forced to exit Friday night’s victory against the San Diego Padres due to a left calf injury. The team moved him to 10-day IL on Saturday and replaced him with RailRiders’ Kevin Smith.
According to reports, Berti immediately went down after running out of the batter’s box in the top of the ninth inning. He was lying on the ground in apparent agony, and eventually, assistance was required to help him off the field.

Witnesses stated that Berti appeared unable to bear any weight on his left foot as he was being helped off the field. After the game, Yankees manager Aaron Boone revealed that Berti had sustained a calf injury and was likely headed to the injured list. Boone mentioned that a move would be made, but they would not rush DJ LeMahieu back from his current rehabilitation assignment.

“Just grabbed on him out of the box,” the Yankees manager said. “We’ll see what we have. I’m sure we’ll get imaging and all that, but obviously, the way he walked off, looked like it got him pretty good.”
“He’s a good player. Hopefully, this is something that doesn’t knock him down too long because he does become a very important part of our bench moving forward.”
Yankees bullpen lose Nick Burdi to hip injury
In another development, relief pitcher Nick Burdi’s hip issue has resurfaced, merely five games after his return from the injured list. Burdi was placed back on the 15-day injured list on Friday due to right hip inflammation, the same injury that had caused him to miss nearly a month earlier in the season. Burdi had returned from the injured list on May 10 and had pitched in five games, with his most recent appearance coming on Thursday when he threw one-third of an inning in the win over the Mariners.
Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:

• Placed RHP Nick Burdi on the 15-day injured list with right hip inflammation.
• Recalled RHP Yoendrys Gómez (#94) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The 31-year-old reliever has maintained a 1.86 ERA through 12 games this season, but this marks his second stint on the injured list before Memorial Day. Prior to signing with the Yankees this offseason, Burdi’s career had been hampered by a series of arm injuries, though now it is his hip that is causing him trouble.
Trevino absent
Yankees catcher Jose Trevino is not included in the starting lineup for Friday’s game against the San Diego Padres due to an illness. According to reports, Trevino was removed from Thursday’s contest because of the illness, and he appears to still be feeling unwell ahead of Friday’s matchup. Austin Wells will get another start behind the plate and bat eighth in the order while Trevino recuperates.
