New York Yankees‘ first baseman, Anthony Rizzo, has been sidelined for the remainder of the 2023 MLB season due to post-concussion syndrome, as confirmed by manager Aaron Boone in a recent announcement. Rizzo’s absence from the lineup has been in effect since last month, leaving fans and the team concerned about his well-being.

“Despite his continuous progress in all the right areas, we have made the decision to shut Anthony Rizzo down for the remainder of the season,” announced Aaron Boone.

What happened to Anthony Rizzo?

Rizzo’s struggles became evident when he spoke to reporters in August, describing the inconsistent nature of his condition. Some days he felt fine, while on others, he felt far from his best. He explained that his concerns grew as he found himself misjudging pitches, believing some were far off the plate when they were not. This erratic performance raised red flags, prompting further evaluation.

The Yankees’ medical staff, after careful examination, attributed Rizzo’s issues to post-concussion syndrome, likely stemming from a collision with San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. that occurred on May 28. Although Rizzo initially passed the MLB concussion protocol testing, he continued to experience persistent fatigue and cognitive impairment, which severely impacted his performance throughout the 2023 season.

Rizzo’s statistical output took a significant hit this year, with a batting average of .244, an on-base percentage of .328, and a slugging percentage of .378. These numbers are a stark contrast to his impressive 2022 season, where he hit 32 home runs. The decline in Rizzo’s performance mirrored the broader struggles of the Yankees, who find themselves in last place in the AL East with a record of 68-69.

Despite a recent uptick in their performance, winning six of their last seven games, the Yankees’ overall performance has been a major disappointment in the 2023 season. This has led to frustration among fans and pundits alike, as the team had high expectations coming into the year.

The silver lining in this situation is that medical professionals expect Rizzo to make a full recovery and return to peak health ahead of the 2024 season. Yankees fans will undoubtedly be eagerly awaiting his return, hoping that his presence can help reinvigorate the team and lead them to better results in the future.
