The Yankees’ acquisition of Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins on Saturday adds further complexity to LeMahieu’s situation. While Chisholm has mainly played middle infield and center field, Boone mentioned that the team would explore various ways to utilize his athleticism, possibly including third base.
The Yankees’ offense is beginning to find its rhythm, leading Manager Aaron Boone to adjust his lineup choices, with veteran DJ LeMahieu noticeably missing from recent starts.
Ahead of Saturday’s 11-8 extra-inning win against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, Boone expressed optimism about the performance of several players. He commended the consistent efforts of Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, the improved at-bats from Gleyber Torres and Alex Verdugo, and the valuable contributions of Austin Wells, Trent Grisham, and Ben Rice.
LeMahieu, however, was absent from Boone’s praise. The two-time batting champion has struggled this season, hitting just .177 with an OPS of .492, among the lowest for players with at least 150 plate appearances.
In Saturday’s game, Oswaldo Cabrera started at third base and hit a home run, while Rice played first base and delivered a critical ninth-inning double. LeMahieu appeared as a defensive substitute at first base in the ninth inning and had a single at-bat in the 10th, resulting in a pop-up.
Boone emphasized that LeMahieu is healthy, attributing his reduced playing time to performance issues.
As the Yankees strive for offensive consistency, integrating Chisholm and managing LeMahieu’s playing time will be crucial. Balancing the experience of veterans with the energy of emerging talent could be key to the Yankees’ playoff hopes.
With the trade deadline nearing, the New York Yankees are facing tough decisions regarding veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu.
Are the Yankees going to dump LeMahieu?
LeMahieu, 36, has seen his playing time dwindle, mainly coming in as a defensive replacement. His offensive woes are evident, having hit just one home run in 44 games since returning from a foot injury in late May.
The decline of the two-time batting champion raises concerns about his future with the Yankees. LeMahieu is currently in the middle of a contract that pays him $15 million annually through 2025, posing a financial dilemma for the team.
This situation mirrors last year’s decision to designate Aaron Hicks for assignment despite a substantial remaining contract. The Yankees now face similar choices with LeMahieu: potentially releasing him, reducing his role to a high-paid backup, or hoping for a resurgence.
LeMahieu’s recent outings haven’t provided much reassurance. In Friday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, he struck out in a critical ninth-inning at-bat against Kenley Jansen after coming in as a defensive replacement.
As Tuesday’s trade deadline approaches, the Yankees must consider LeMahieu’s chances of bouncing back versus the team’s immediate needs. The decision could significantly affect their roster strategy and financial flexibility moving forward.
The New York Yankees made a significant move ahead of the trade deadline on Saturday, securing outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. from the Miami Marlins in exchange for a package of prospects.
The trade, first reported by Craig Mish of the Miami Herald, involves the Yankees sending three minor leaguers to the Marlins, including top catching prospect Agustin Ramirez. According to Baseball America, Ramirez is ranked as the Yankees’ No. 3 prospect.
Chisholm, 26, brings a .249 batting average and a .730 OPS to a Yankees lineup in need of a spark. While he started his career as an infielder, he has primarily played center field for the Marlins in recent seasons. Known for his power and speed, Chisholm is expected to provide a boost to New York’s offense.
There are, however, concerns about how Chisholm’s vibrant personality will integrate with the Yankees‘ clubhouse culture. An anonymous poll in The Athletic earlier this year labeled Chisholm as the most “overrated player in MLB,” and ESPN has reported potential reservations within the Yankees organization regarding his fit.
This acquisition comes at a crucial juncture for the Yankees, who have lost 24 of their last 35 games, including a tough defeat to the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. The team’s struggles have increased pressure on general manager Brian Cashman to make impactful roster changes.
The Yankees’ recent performance has been particularly troubling, with a 1-8-2 record in their last 11 series since mid-June.
Chisholm trade a warning to Torres
The 26-year-old Chisholm Jr. has been performing with a .249 batting average and a .730 OPS. While he’s been positioned in center field for the Marlins in recent seasons, his background is as an infielder. The Marlins’ recent announcement about increasing his playtime at second base has sparked speculation about whether this move was intended to showcase him for the Yankees.
This development has led to questions about the future of Gleyber Torres in New York, despite his recent uptick in performance. Torres, who had been struggling earlier, has shown improvement lately.
Chisholm Jr.’s pull-side power and base-running speed are seen as potential offensive improvements for the Yankees. However, as with previous acquisitions like Marcus Stroman and Alex Verdugo, there are concerns about how Chisholm Jr.’s vibrant personality will mesh with the team culture.
Earlier this year, an anonymous poll of MLB players published in The Athletic labeled Chisholm Jr. as the most overrated player in the league. Additionally, ESPN reported that the Yankees have expressed reservations about his potential impact on clubhouse dynamics.
The team’s recent poor performance has been attributed to various factors, from player underperformance to front office decisions. With multiple areas needing improvement, including third base, left field, starting pitching, and the bullpen, the Yankees still have time before the Tuesday night trade deadline to address these issues.
The integration of Chisholm Jr. into the lineup presents an interesting challenge, particularly given Torres’ recent hot streak at second base, where he’s been hitting .329 over his last 19 games.

If you want some real help for the Yankees bats and arms, get real baseball coaches, and tell the front office to get out of the way and let these guys coach baseball, not analytics!
DJ at this point, can take a seat on the bench. There is no more time this season to continue to keep on trying to find yourself.
If Gleyber wants a shot at coming back here next year, keep hitting, and move to 3B and play it as good as Odor did a couple of years back. Otherwise, no shot at coming back.
Barring any further trades, Glyeber must take over 3B, because as much as I love Cabrera, he is a guy suited for playing maybe 4-5 times a week, I’d like to cut that down though 2 or 3.
