Yankees get a decent swap chance at reported two pitching targets

The New York Yankees are expected to make significant roster changes ahead of the July 30 trade deadline, focusing on bolstering their bullpen. Despite a talented roster, recent performances have highlighted critical areas needing reinforcement.

One notable target is Michael Kopech, the Chicago White Sox pitcher. Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that Kopech’s trade likelihood has risen as the deadline approaches, with the White Sox likely to offload several players given their current standing.

The Yankees have shown serious interest in Kopech, having scouted him this season. New York’s bullpen, currently anchored by closer Clay Holmes, could see Kopech as a valuable set-up man. With Holmes potentially entering free agency, Kopech, who remains under team control for the next year, could be groomed as a future closer.

Adding Kopech would significantly enhance the Yankees‘ bullpen, providing a high-leverage, swing-and-miss reliever. This move aligns with the team’s aspirations for the 2024 season, as they aim to solidify their World Series contention.

Acquiring Kopech reflects the Yankees’ strategy to address specific roster gaps while maintaining their competitive edge. As the deadline nears, crucial decisions by the front office will shape the team’s performance for the rest of the season and beyond.

Yankees likely have a chance at the Rays’ arm

Reports indicate that the Tampa Bay Rays are actively trading players as the July 30 MLB Trade Deadline nears, which could present an opportunity for the New York Yankees. Despite being in Wild Card contention, the Rays have already traded reliever Phil Maton to the Mets and starter Aaron Civale to the Brewers.

According to SNY’s Andy Martino, Yankees personnel have expressed interest in Rays left-handed reliever Garrett Cleavinger since early in the season. Cleavinger, 30, has posted a 3.52 ERA and 1.36 WHIP, with 49 strikeouts in 38.1 innings this year.

With the Yankees in need of left-handed relief pitching and their bullpen struggling, Cleavinger could be a valuable acquisition. Recent trades, such as the Mets acquiring Maton for a minimal return, suggest the Yankees might be able to secure Cleavinger at a relatively low cost.

This potential addition underscores the Yankees’ strategy to strengthen their pitching staff as they aim for a playoff spot.

However, Cleavinger’s recent form and injury history raise some concerns. After a torn ACL limited him to just 15 appearances in 2023, he has put up solid numbers this season but has struggled lately, giving up 11 earned runs in his last 12.2 innings.

At the same time, the Yankees are considering moving rookie starter Luis Gil to the bullpen as he nears his career-high in professional innings. In light of this, they might seek a depth starter, especially with Clarke Schmidt making progress in his injury recovery.

Even with Gil potentially shifting to a relief role, the Yankees still need multiple bullpen reinforcements. Cleavinger has been on their radar for a while, and a deal could be in the works in the coming weeks.

These moves reflect the Yankees’ proactive approach to bolstering their pitching staff as they address injuries and performance issues heading into the critical latter part of the season.

  1. The biggest help to the Ya keeps would be is to change either 3B or 2B. With both main guys right now being RHB, playing Cabrera at their spot a combined 2-3 times a week would help. I get why they sent Vivas down (money, service time for 4 dead days), but was stupid. Personally, I would’ve left him up, and cut J.D. Davis tomorrow. But not playing Vivas at all last weekend was moronic.
