Gerrit Cole, the New York Yankees’ premier pitcher and cornerstone of their rotation, finds himself in the spotlight once again—but this time for reasons less celebratory. After an injury-marred 2024 season, the Yankees ace was notably left off the prestigious B/R Walk-Off All-MLB pitching list, a development that has stirred discussions about his performance and role within the Yankees’ future plans.

Cole’s omission comes after a season fraught with hurdles. The ace entered 2024 with high expectations following his stellar 2023 campaign. However, a series of setbacks, starting with elbow inflammation during spring training, derailed his momentum. The All-MLB Team, established to recognize baseball’s top performers each season, serves as a barometer of excellence, and being left out of the list underscores the struggles Cole and the Yankees endured this year.

2024 a challenging season for Gerrit Cole

Cole’s 2024 campaign began on an ominous note. During spring training, the Yankees’ medical staff identified elbow inflammation, which led to a prolonged absence. After being placed on the 60-day injured list in late March, he missed the early part of the season, delaying his first start until June 19. While his debut against the Baltimore Orioles showed glimpses of his talent, with five strikeouts over four innings, he failed to reach the dominance fans had come to expect.

His second start, a subway showdown against the Mets, was particularly concerning. Cole allowed six earned runs over four innings and failed to record a single strikeout—an anomaly for a pitcher of his caliber. Nevertheless, the ace battled back, securing his first win of the season against the Blue Jays on June 30, providing hope for a strong second half.

The Yankees can nullify Gerrit Cole's decision to opt out of his contact by adding one more season to the end of his nine-year dea

Cole went on to play a pivotal role in the Yankees’ journey to the postseason. Despite battling inconsistencies, he made critical appearances in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, delivering solid outings in Games 1 and 5. However, his performances, while steady, weren’t enough to overshadow the injuries and disruptions that defined his season.

Cole’s season wasn’t just marked by on-field challenges—it was also a year of significant contract negotiations. With an opt-out clause in his nine-year, $324 million deal, the Yankees ace had the opportunity to test free agency, leaving $144 million over four years on the table. To retain their ace, the Yankees could have countered by adding an extra year worth $36 million.

In a surprising twist, the Yankees and Cole reached an agreement that kept the deal as originally structured. This decision, seen as a financial victory for the team, ensures The ace pitcher’s presence in the rotation without extending the long-term risk. However, it also underscores the organization’s belief in Cole’s ability to bounce back from an injury-riddled year.

Exclusion from All-MLB team a notable snub

The All-MLB Team is a coveted accolade that honors the league’s elite players each season. Cole’s absence from this year’s roster raises questions about his perceived value following a season marked by turbulence. While he demonstrated flashes of brilliance, the interruptions to his season likely weighed heavily on voters’ decisions. For a player of Cole’s stature—one of the most consistent and effective pitchers of his generation—being excluded is a sobering reminder of how injuries and performance dips can impact even the most accomplished athletes.

Insider Michael Kay asks the Yankees to consider Nolan Arenado of the Cardinals as Juan Soto Plan B if the slugger doesn't return for the 2025 season.

As the Yankees prepare for the 2025 season, Gerrit Cole’s role remains central to their aspirations. The organization’s faith in him, evident in their commitment during contract negotiations, speaks volumes about their belief in his ability to rebound. For Cole, the coming season represents an opportunity to prove that 2024 was an anomaly—a year defined by circumstances rather than decline.

In addition to retaining Cole, the Yankees are actively exploring ways to strengthen their pitching staff. Reports indicate mutual interest between the team and Walker Buehler, the Dodgers’ standout pitcher who played a crucial role in securing Los Angeles’ championship. Adding Buehler could provide the Yankees with much-needed depth and lessen the pressure on Cole to carry the rotation single-handedly.

The news of Cole’s exclusion from the All-MLB Team has prompted mixed reactions. Fans remain loyal to their ace, recognizing his contributions despite a difficult season. Analysts, on the other hand, have pointed to his inconsistencies as a reason for the snub, emphasizing the need for the Yankees ace to regain his dominant form in 2025.

Gerrit Cole’s 2024 season serves as a reminder of the challenges that come with being an elite athlete. His exclusion from the All-MLB Team, while disappointing, should not overshadow his resilience in overcoming injuries and playing a key role in the Yankees’ postseason campaign. As the Yankees look ahead, Cole’s performance and leadership will be critical in their quest for another championship. For now, the ace stands at a crossroads, determined to reclaim his spot among baseball’s elite.

Too many times when you make up lists, everyone has their own take on his they define what they’re listing, along with what you did last year. Cole was hurt in 2024, and it took him until GS #4, to get going.
