In a recent clash between the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Guardians, Yankees ace Gerrit Cole found himself embroiled in controversy due to a pitch clock violation before the start of the second inning. The incident unfolded when Gerrit Cole delivered an extra warm-up pitch, prompting home plate umpire Derek Thomas to enforce a penalty against the pitcher.

The violation occurred while Guardians’ leadoff hitter Jhonkensy Noel was still out of the batter’s box. Gerrit Cole, visibly displeased with the call, reportedly voiced his frustration, leading Yankees manager Aaron Boone to emerge from the dugout to engage in the discussion.

As a result of the penalty, Gerrit Cole started the inning with a 1-0 count against Noel. Despite the setback, Cole navigated the inning without further incident, though his displeasure was evident, particularly as he exchanged words with Thomas upon the inning’s conclusion.

The exact reason for the violation remains unclear, with speculation ranging from Gerrit Cole exceeding the allotted number of warm-up pitches to taking too long between innings. Regardless, the incident underscored the Yankees ace’s irritation with the enforcement of the pitch clock rules.

This marks the second time this season that Gerrit Cole has been penalized for a pitch clock violation before the start of an inning. The previous instance occurred during a July 19 game against the Tampa Bay Rays when he failed to complete his final warm-up pitch within the designated timeframe.

The situation highlights the ongoing adjustments both players and umpires are making to the pitch clock regulations, which continue to stir debate and occasionally spark tension on the field.
