NEW YORK — Jose Trevino‘s baby was born in Texas late Thursday night or early Friday morning. Manager Aaron Boone told reporters that the birth went well.
All is good there, Boone said. I haven’t circled up with him yet on exactly his plans on when he’s going to travel back.
Boone stated that he did not know for certain whether or not Trevino would return in time to play in the three-game series against the Rays that concludes on Sunday. The Yankees will have the day off on Monday, and then they will travel to Boston for a two-game set beginning on Tuesday. On Friday, it was expected that Kyle Higashioka would get the start in the catcher’s position.
Catcher Ben Rortvedt, who the Yankees have high hopes for after acquiring him from the Twins in an early-spring training trade that also brought Josh Donaldson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the Bronx, will remain in the Yankees’ organization until catcher Jose Trevino returns to the lineup.
Friday was the first time the Yankees used Rortvedt. The Yankees were hoping that Rortvedt and Kyle Higashioka could share time at catcher this season, but the 24-year-old showed up with a right oblique strain that kept him out of spring training. Then, in mid-May, Rortvedt had to have arthroscopy to clean up the meniscus in his left knee.
Rortvedt played in 31 games at the Triple-A level for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and had a batting average of .211 with four home runs, 17 RBI, and an OPS of .681. He is known to be an excellent defender.
Since August 5, Trevino has played in 26 games and has a batting average of .230 with no home runs, three RBI, and an OPS of .509. His performance in the first half helped him earn his first selection to the All-Star team.
As part of the trade with the Yankees, the Twins were able to acquire catcher Gary Sanchez as well as third baseman Gio Urshela.
