Amidst a series of injuries, an aging roster, and the uncertainty surrounding Aaron Judge’s “rare” toe injury, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner continues to show unwavering support for the team’s manager and general manager. Despite the setbacks, he maintains his belief that the Yankees possess a championship-caliber team and expresses optimism about their potential to win it all.
Speaking about the team’s current situation, Hal Steinbrenner acknowledges the challenges they face but remains resolute in his support for the Yankees’ top brass. He emphasizes the importance of getting the players back on the field and believes that with a healthy roster, the team has what it takes to compete for the championship. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Judge’s recovery timeline, Hal Steinbrenner’s confidence in the team’s ability to overcome obstacles remains steadfast.
The Yankees head reaffirmed his unwavering support for general manager Brian Cashman and manager Aaron Boone, emphasizing that their job security does not hinge solely on the team’s postseason success. Steinbrenner’s comments underscore a clear rejection of demands to sack the duo.
Hal Steinbrenner drove home the point that injuries posed challenges but stresses that there would be no immediate change in the team management. He deemphasized playoff results as the sole determinant of job security for Cashman and Boone though promised a review after the season.
“Well, no, but it is contingent on the end of the year,” he said. “I’m going to reevaluate what we did and what we didn’t do and whose fault it is.”
As the Yankees prepare for their second Subway Series game against the Mets, owner Hal Steinbrenner refrains from placing blame on general manager Brian Cashman or manager Aaron Boone for the team’s underperformance. With a record of 39-29 and currently sitting in third place in the highly competitive AL East, the Yankees have faced challenges.
Injuries have taken a toll on the team, with 12 players currently on the injured list. Notable absences include Aaron Judge, Harrison Bader, and Carlos Rodon, who was expected to strengthen the pitching rotation. Despite these setbacks, Steinbrenner acknowledges the impact of injuries and the frustration of not having key players available. Hal Steinbrenner remains hopeful that once the injured players return and the team is at full strength, they will be able to pursue their championship aspirations.
“We’ve been playing with two-thirds of a team the entire year” because of injuries, he told when asked about Cashman and Boone. “It’s tough in this division to do that. We’ve got to get healthy. I know everybody has injuries, but it’s been pretty bad this year from Day One. Unlike last year where we were doing very, very well and then we got hit with injuries in July-ish, this has just been a constant thing.”

Hal Steinbrenner expressed his readiness to increase the team’s payroll ahead of the August 1 trade deadline. However, he emphasized the need for caution and sustainability, considering the financial challenges posed by COVID-19 and the 2021 lockout. While willing to invest in the team, Steinbrenner acknowledged that extravagant spending, such as a $400 million payroll, is not a sustainable approach. The focus remains on assessing specific areas of need, including the status of injured players like Carlos Rodon and Frankie Montas acquired in previous trades. As the season progresses, adjustments to the estimated payroll of around $300 million will be made.
“If someone comes to me and says, we really like this guy and even though you have to pay him $30 million, he can get us a world championship, I’m going to consider that,” Steinbrenner said. “But spending money for the sake of spending money? I just don’t know.”
Hal Steinbrenner expressed overall satisfaction with the Yankees’ ability to stay competitive despite injuries and the challenges of a tough division. However, he emphasized the need for the team to ignite their offense. Recognizing the importance of player health, Hal Steinbrenner evaluated the team’s medical department, which underwent significant changes with the addition of Eric Cressey as the director of player health and performance in 2020. Steinbrenner’s focus remains on supporting the team’s resilience while addressing the need for improved offensive performance.
“There’s always room for improvement” according to Steinbrenner, who also told that while the team had previously maintained an average number of IL days over the past two years, this season has seen them exceed that average.
“I wish I could say from the report that there’s a smoking gun — that we need to change this and we’re golden. But there really wasn’t . . . We tend to have an older team compared to a lot of others and I think workload management is something we really strive to get better at.”
However, that has not prevented the Yankees from buying signing older free agents.
“We’re always going to try to do what we can in the player development system,” he said. “But no, this is New York City. Fans want the stars. We need the veterans. It needs to be a good mix of veterans and young kids.”
Yankees fans are clearly unhappy with Hal Steinbrenner
The owner’s comments about the team and support to Cashman and Boone immediately invited reactions from Yankees fans, who slammed Hal Steinbrenner for giving excuses and failing to differentiate facts from fiction.
And I present to you Hal Steinbrenner ladies and gentlemen https://t.co/uUBt1TzEeg pic.twitter.com/PmU5dpgOr4

It boggles the mind just how stupid he truly is. Wealthy, but stupid. It’s a good thing the old man left him all that $$$$.

There’s no excuse Hal Steinbrenner loves more than the injury excuse. https://t.co/52dp7q9gU8

Hal Steinbrenner, confirmed dumb guy https://t.co/lekuGCpI8s
— Anthony Siniscalchi (@ant_sin) June 13, 2023
LOL. Just like every season since 09….
— Bill Shepherd… (@MyGSDogHavoK) June 13, 2023
The Yankees will never have a Championship caliber roster until Hal ends the lifetime scholarship of his GM….
If Cashman didn't waste 44 million on a Donaldson, Hicks and Montas and used the $$ wisely it might be a championship caliber…
Someone please tell Hal Steinbrenner that the Yankees (not including Judge) have a .686 OPS
— fan of the Yankees (@realboshek) June 13, 2023
the team STINKS. up and down the order
And it's all his fault… There was no reason to give the weasel a 4-year extension
They've never had a championship caliber roster under Hal Steinbrenner and Hal Steinbrenner only. You know whos fault that is? Hal Steinbrenner. Who brought back Cashman? Hal Steinbrenner. Who allows Cashman to run rampant making terrible decisions? Hal Steinbrenner. No excuses.

Blaming injury’s instead of the man who put injury prone players on the team that’s the Hal way amiright
— James Brinn 🇷🇺🇺🇸 (@JamesBrinn19) June 13, 2023
@Yankees Hal Steinbrenner can stop insulting the intelligence of fans with comments like this!

I’m tired of hearing the same shit every year. We need results, not excuses! Find players that stay healthy!
— NYY Central (@NYY_Central) June 13, 2023
Here we go again blaming it on injuries how bout we blame it on Cashman ig we didn’t learn from last year THIS IS A INJURY PRONE TEAM this will be there excuse for years to come YOU guys put this team together
— J (@Jerrybaseball27) June 13, 2023
We've reached the point of the year where no one could have guesses this roster in the offseason. And that comes earlier and earlier each year now.
— Bronx Snot Rocket (@sour_sneakers) June 13, 2023
Steinbrenner might be believable if he was a baseball fan, let alone a Yankee fan. But he’s not. He’s a businessman.
— Mike Plaisance (@PlaisanceM55441) June 13, 2023
I like Hal,great guy,but working with Cashman has a bad side effect on fact and fiction. They are in no way a WS-caliber team at full strength. A poorly fit puzzle that has failed time after time.
— Love Humanity Stop Those That Don't (@ALANDexter2020) June 13, 2023
Hal Steinbrenner and Aaron Boone say the same things every time they speak.
— Joe Randazzo (@Yankeelibrarian) June 13, 2023
It's the same carefully crafted PR statement every time like any other business. At this point you do it to yourself if you're still getting mad.
Hal is the cheapest person to ever be a part of the Yankees organization. His father would be ashamed.
— Fully Schuster (@Fully_schuster) June 14, 2023
If Hal Steinbrenner wants to make an impression he should take the rug off his head and glue it to his glad handling yes man Brian Cashman.

The Yankees hired two former MLB GM’s (Brian Sabean and Omar Minaya) over the 2022-2023 off season to help Cashman but you don’t hear about them anymore. Are they there, are they helping, what are they doing? Seems like same old Cashman show even with the new brain trust. What was the point of getting Cashman help if he’s not utilizing them?

Hal blew it by resigning Cashman. We haven’t been to the world series for 14 years! The opportunity to bring Derek Jeter was there as well as Don Mattangly. Two Yankee greats with knowledge and experience behind them. To stay with a losing GM and an unknown hitting coach is the problem. I don’t blame Aaron Boone at all, he’s using what he has available! Hal needs to take the blame and make changes ASAP!

As long as the Steingrabbers make money nothing will change. Boycott the games. Stop buying their merchandise. Hit them where it hurts, in their pocketbooks. Unfortunately that will not happen.
