The New York Mets are once again targeting a former Yankee to bolster their roster. According to a recent article by Newsdays, the Mets have “been interested lately” in free-agent left-handed reliever Tim Hill. Hill, who split the 2024 season between the Chicago White Sox and Yankees, posted a combined 3.36 ERA, but his turnaround truly began once he joined the Yankees in late June.

Tim Hill’s remarkable turnaround with the Yankees

Tim Hill makes his Yankees debut on June 20, 2024, vs. Baltimore at Yankee Stadium, a day after his signing.

Tim Hill struggled with a 5.87 ERA during his time with the White Sox but flourished in pinstripes after being acquired as a reclamation project. He emerged as one of the Yankees’ most reliable bullpen arms, recording a stellar 2.05 ERA and 1.02 WHIP across 44 innings in the regular season. Hill also played a crucial role in the Yankees’ postseason, delivering a 1.08 ERA over 8.1 innings during their run to the World Series.

Despite Tim Hill’s success, his usage in key moments drew scrutiny. In Game 1 of the World Series, manager Aaron Boone’s decision to use Nestor Cortes Jr. instead of Hill in extra innings resulted in a walk-off grand slam by Dodgers’ first baseman Freddie Freeman, sparking debate among fans.

The Yankees reportedly remain interested in bringing Tim Hill back as they aim to bolster their bullpen, which already features newly acquired closer Devin Williams. Fans have also taken to social media, urging the team to re-sign Hill. However, the Mets are equally motivated to address their bullpen needs, particularly given that Danny Young is currently the only left-handed reliever on their 40-man roster.

Hill, who turns 35 in February, is likely seeking a one-year deal with an option for 2026. The Mets view him as a cost-effective solution, especially compared to other options like All-Star closer Tanner Scott. Scott, who recently met with the Mets, is expected to command a multi-year deal and would serve as a dominant setup man to closer Edwin Diaz. If Scott proves too expensive, Hill offers a practical alternative for the Mets as they seek to upgrade their relief options.

Mets’ history of raiding the Yankees

Over the past two years, the Mets have steadily raided the Yankees for players and coaches, including Juan Soto, Clay Holmes, Luis Severino, Carlos Mendoza, and Desi Druschel. With both New York teams expressing interest, Hill finds himself at the center of a potential bidding war. His decision may ultimately hinge on role, financial terms, and the opportunity to contribute to a contending team. For now, the Mets are positioning themselves to add another valuable arm to their bullpen, continuing their trend of capitalizing on Yankees talent.
