DJ LeMahieu is pushing to be ready for a potential return from the injured list in October, but he’s uncertain if the Yankees will find a spot for him. The veteran infielder, speaking with reporters from his locker on Friday, shared a mix of optimism and realism about his situation.

LeMahieu pushes for October comeback

On Sept 21, 2024, Boone revealed that LeMahieu has resumed light baseball activities, including hitting off a tee in recent days.

LeMahieu, who landed on the injured list earlier this month with a right hip impingement, said he’s feeling better than he expected. He mentioned that his movement is improving, which is an encouraging sign as he works toward a potential postseason return. However, the Yankees have plenty of infield depth, and LeMahieu knows that even if he’s fit, his role isn’t guaranteed.

The Yankees are coming off a strong regular season, having clinched the division title and a first-round bye. With the team in good form and several infield options available, including utility players like Oswaldo Cabrera and Jon Berti, it may be challenging for LeMahieu to earn a spot. Before going on the injured list, he was struggling, batting just .204 with a .528 OPS over 67 games—by far the toughest season of his career.

Despite the uncertainties, LeMahieu is determined to be available. He’s gradually getting back into baseball activities, including running and playing catch on the outfield grass. “Now that we know we have five days, I’m just going to use that time to see if I can be ready at all,” LeMahieu said. “I don’t know if they’ll use me or not, but I’m definitely going to try to be available.”

Yankees manager Aaron Boone hasn’t ruled out LeMahieu’s potential return for the playoffs. When asked if LeMahieu could make the postseason roster, Boone offered a cautious “we’ll see.” Boone expressed his admiration for LeMahieu’s work ethic, stating, “The encouraging thing is how he’s feeling and his willingness to grind. I’m really excited about that and hopeful that we’ve helped the situation. We’ll see as we move forward.”

LeMahieu’s possible role would likely be as a right-handed backup for Anthony Rizzo at first base, offering an option against tough left-handed pitchers. However, the Yankees have other reliable options—Oswaldo Cabrera has been more than capable at first base, starting there on Friday against the Pirates.

The Yankees also don’t have a pressing need at third base, with Jazz Chisholm Jr. playing daily and Cabrera and Berti available as versatile backups.

“Our team’s playing great right now,” LeMahieu acknowledged. “I just want to do everything I can to make sure I am an option.”

Asked if he had any communication with the Yankees about his potential role if healthy, LeMahieu said no. He remains open to being a presence in the clubhouse even if he can’t make it back in time to play. “It’s been good being around the guys, for sure,” he said. “It’s definitely what keeps me coming to the park every day.”

While his future on the roster remains uncertain, LeMahieu’s determination to be ready to contribute speaks to his dedication to the team. Whether he can carve out a role during the playoffs will depend on his progress over the next few days and the Yankees’ needs as they prepare for the postseason.
