Former Yankees infielder LeMahieu wins championship in first year as manager

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — For six seasons in the Bronx, DJ LeMahieu turned at-bats into wars of attrition. He fouled off pitch after pitch, wore pitchers down and let the results speak. Yankees fans came to know the routine by heart.

The uniform is different now. The dugout is smaller, the ballpark is a modest community park, and the players are college kids on summer break. What has not changed is the man running the show, or the way he goes about it.

A little more than a year after the Yankees cut him loose, LeMahieu took a job most former big leaguers never bother with, managing a college wood-bat team in a 26-team developmental circuit, and treated it like it mattered.

The choice looked humble at the time. It looks a lot smarter now.

LeMahieu won a championship in his first season as a manager. His Royal Oak Leprechauns took the Northwoods League title Thursday night in St. Cloud, beating the Rox 3-1 in the deciding game. The two-time batting champion who could not find a major league job after the Yankees released him has, at 37, already put a trophy in his hands as a coach.

The result is a small footnote in the baseball world and a large one for Yankees fans. The same quiet, relentless approach that defined LeMahieu’s time in pinstripes just carried a roster of college players to a title, in his very first attempt at leading one.

How the Leprechauns won the title

The championship game unfolded the way LeMahieu’s best at-bats used to. Slowly, then decisively. Royal Oak trailed 1-0 into the eighth inning, held down and waiting for a crack.

Then the Leprechauns found one. Luke Kosko chopped a two-out, two-run single for Royal Oak’s first lead of the night, flipping a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 advantage the Leps did not give back.

The pitching made it stand. A freshman right-hander set the tone with six shutout innings, and Ethan Reidy, a 2026 graduate of Brother Rice, LeMahieu’s own alma mater, closed out the final outs to seal the 3-1 win and the title.

It was a fitting finish. A low-scoring grind decided late, won by the team that outlasted the other. The manager could not have scripted it more in his own image.

LeMahieu credits the grind, not the talent

After the game, LeMahieu spoke with the Leprechauns’ broadcaster, Noah Chavez. He opened the way anyone who watched him play would expect, proud of his players and happy for them rather than focused on himself. Then Chavez asked him about grit, and LeMahieu warmed to the subject.

“I [we] always call them the gritty Leps. We don’t have the best field, and the Northwoods League is a grind, but these guys have showed up every single day no matter the circumstance, no matter the travel, time of day, they show up to play, and that’s what I’m most proud of,” LeMahieu said.

He then framed the championship itself as an extension of that habit, almost in passing, as if the outcome were secondary to the work that produced it.

“It showed in these playoffs, we just showed up and went about our business,” LeMahieu said.

The detail Yankees fans can’t ignore: They’re still paying him

Here is the twist that ties this championship straight back to the Bronx. The Yankees are still paying LeMahieu right now, in the exact season he won it.

When the Yankees designated him for assignment on July 9, 2025, and released him a day later, they still owed roughly $22 million on the six-year deal he signed before the 2021 season, about $7 million for the rest of 2025 and a full $15 million for 2026. No team claimed him. No team signed him. He never played another major league game.

So while LeMahieu managed a college summer team to a title this August, he did it as one of the highest-paid people in the Northwoods League by a wide margin, funded by a contract the Yankees are still covering. A player the club moved on from is spending his Yankees money building a coaching resume, and winning with it.

From a Bronx breakup to a new baseball life

The end in New York was not pretty. LeMahieu had been a cornerstone when he arrived in 2019, finishing near the top of AL MVP voting in his first two seasons and winning the 2020 batting title, his second after one with Colorado in 2016. Injuries and age eroded the production. When the Yankees shifted Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base, LeMahieu lost his everyday role, and the club decided to eat the money and part ways.

Even in the breakup, the respect was real. Manager Aaron Boone called him one of the most respected players the Yankees had rostered, praising his professionalism and toughness. Those are the same traits now defining his second act, one dugout removed from the majors.

The roster he built reflected the approach. LeMahieu and his staff assembled a wide mix, junior college transfers alongside Division II and III players, plus power-conference names bound for programs like Oklahoma and East Carolina. Blending a constantly changing summer roster into one identity is a real coaching test, and the title suggests he passed it.

For now, LeMahieu is a champion in his first year on the other side of the game. The former Yankees infielder has not framed this as a stepping stone or talked about where it leads, which is entirely in character. He showed up, put in the work and won, the way he always did in the Bronx.

Yankees fans who spent six years watching him grind out at-bats can recognize exactly what happened in St. Cloud. The jersey changed. The dugout shrank. The relentlessness did not. A player the Yankees discarded is winning again, on his own terms, and still on their dime.
