Yankees’ infield woes: DJ LeMahieu’s absence looms large
Heading into the 2024 season, the Yankees seemed well-prepared, particularly in their infield positions. However, injuries have posed significant challenges, with D.J. LeMahieu, a three-time All-Star, notably affected. Expected to play a pivotal role at third base, LeMahieu has been sidelined by a lingering foot injury, despite his proven versatility across multiple infield positions.
While initial signs pointed to progress in LeMahieu’s recovery, setbacks have led to uncertainty surrounding his return. Aaron Boone’s recent remarks, as relayed by Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, underscore the challenges the team faces in LeMahieu’s rehabilitation process.
“Aaron Boone on DJ LeMahieu: ‘I don’t know if he’s that close to being ready for rehab,'” Kirschner said. “Boone said he hit a little bit yesterday and today. Boone said (Gerrit Cole) recovered fine after yesterday’s 15-pitch bullpen. They plan for him to get back on the mound at some point this week.”
Despite the Yankees’ early-season successes, LeMahieu’s absence has been acutely felt, particularly during periods of offensive struggles. His absence has left a noticeable void in the team’s lineup, given his batting prowess and defensive capabilities.
