The New York Yankees hold a 2-0 lead in the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the Cleveland Guardians, following back-to-back victories of 5-2 and 6-3 in the first two games.
First baseman Anthony Rizzo, 35, has remained notably calm amid the high-stakes playoff environment. Known for his laid-back approach, the Yankees star often lightens the mood by pranking his teammates, even during postseason games.
Yankees bullpen coach Mike Harkey shared in a Wednesday interview with the YES Network that Rizzo frequently makes playful prank calls to the bullpen. According to Harkey, the calls—typically made around the fourth inning—come at a time when the bullpen is often preparing for serious action. “I always have to scold him after the game,” Harkey joked, explaining that the tension in the bullpen heightens whenever the phone rings, as it’s usually an indication that a struggling pitcher might need to be replaced.
“Just trying to keep it as loose as I can because I know when the phone rings it becomes a little bit heart-pounding. Especially when Rizzo calls in the fourth inning, like he always does,” he revealed. “Look, I have to yell at him after every game to stop playing on the phone. But, yeah, he likes to play on the bullpen phone.”
Soto deal may force Yankees to dump Rizzo
The New York Yankees are facing crucial decisions this offseason as they aim for a World Series run. A primary concern is creating more flexibility within the luxury tax constraints, especially if they intend to offer a substantial contract to superstar Juan Soto.
This financial maneuvering might lead to some difficult choices, with Anthony Rizzo potentially being affected. Rizzo’s contract includes a $17 million club option with a $6 million buyout. Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac anticipates that the Yankees might opt for the buyout rather than committing to Rizzo’s full salary, particularly given his recent performance decline.
Ginnitti noted that Rizzo’s production and reliability have diminished lately, which could influence the Yankees’ decision to choose the buyout over the full salary for the upcoming season.
In his first two games against the Guardians, Rizzo has been a steady contributor, collecting three hits in seven at-bats, scoring a run, and drawing a walk. He praised manager Aaron Boone’s handling of the pitching staff, commending his ability to give starters more leeway while making key decisions in the bullpen.
Despite their series advantage, Rizzo emphasized that the Yankees remain focused, avoiding any sense of complacency. He acknowledged the Guardians’ competitive nature and highlighted the importance of staying sharp, especially with the series shifting to Progressive Field for Game 3.
As the series continues, the Yankees are preparing for what promises to be a tough atmosphere in Cleveland. Game 3 is set for Thursday when the Yankees will try to extend their lead on the Guardians’ home turf.
