The New York Yankees secured their 32nd consecutive winning season with a 2-0 triumph over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday, extending one of the most remarkable streaks in professional sports.

The victory marked the Yankees’ 82nd win of 2023, ensuring a winning record that dates back to 1993. The last time the team finished below .500 was in 1992 when they posted a 76-86 record. The streak’s closest call came just last season when the Bombers clinched a winning record in their second-to-last game.

This achievement ties the Yankees with the Montreal Canadiens for the second-longest run of consecutive winning seasons in North American sports history. The Canadiens enjoyed their streak from 1951-52 to 1982-83, a span during which they captured 24 Stanley Cup titles.

However, the Yankees’ current streak isn’t even their longest; from 1926 to 1964, the team notched 39 straight winning seasons, winning 19 World Series championships during that era.

On August 25, 2024, Juan Soto and Aaron Judge were crucial during the Yankees' win over the Rockies at Yankee Stadium, in New York.

The Yankees‘ active streak is unmatched across major North American sports leagues. The closest in other leagues are the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs with 11 straight winning seasons, the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers at 13, and the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins with 18. In MLB, the Los Angeles Dodgers have the second-longest active streak with 14 consecutive winning seasons.

Though the Yankees have not won a championship since 2009, their consistency has kept them in the playoff picture nearly every year. Since 1993, they’ve missed the postseason just seven times, capturing seven American League pennants and five World Series titles along the way.

While the ultimate goal remains winning the franchise’s 28th World Series, the Yankees’ continued success in securing winning seasons reflects their sustained excellence and positions them well for another playoff push in 2024.
