Even though he hasn’t made his debut with the Yankees yet, right-handed pitcher Greg Weissert is already familiar with pitching in the Bronx.

The right-hander from Fordham University was set to replace Nestor Cortes on Thursday. Scott Effross (shoulder), Albert Abreu (elbow), and Clay Holmes (back) are out, and Aroldis Chapman and Zack Britton are still recovering from UCL surgery.

This season, Weissert has been very successful with SWB, compiling a WHIP of 0.891 in 40 appearances while striking out 67 batters across 46 innings of work.

Weissert threw for Fordham University for three years before being selected by the Yankees in the 18th round in the year 2016.

The 27-year-old also played for Long Island’s Bay Shore High School. He will be the first player from Fordham to join the Yankees since Johnny Murphy did so in 1946.

Right-handed reliever Murphy played for almost all of his 13-year career in The Bronx. He was on seven teams that won the World Series, and he managed the Mets when they won the World Series in 1969. Hank Borowy was a Yankees reliever in 1942-45.

Kevin Leighton was Weissert’s coach at Fordham. He knows that if nothing else, Weissert has the right attitude to do well with the Yankees.

Leighton said that as a freshman, he used Weissert as a closer, but as a sophomore and junior, he put him in the rotation.

Weissert has allowed one earned run in 29 ¹/₃ innings while striking out 44 and walking 7. Additionally, he has 18 saves under his belt.

On Friday, Holmes is scheduled to throw a bullpen session.

J.P. Sears has emerged as the most promising of the pitchers acquired by the Yankees in exchange for Frankie Montas. This has been the case throughout the entirety of the trade.

When he starts for the A’s against the Yankees on Friday, it will be the first time the Yankees have seen him from the other team’s point of view.

Some people were afraid that Montas would be like Sonny Gray, who did well with the A’s in Oakland, which is a good place for pitchers, but not so well with the Yankees. On the other hand, Sears has done well with his new team, just like he did earlier this season with the Yankees.

Sears has started all three of his games, and he has only given up three runs in 15 and a third innings. This gives him an earned runs average of 1.76.

He hasn’t been as hard to hit with the A’s as he was with the Yankees, but he’s still been very good.

Ken Waldichuk, Luis Medina, and Cooper Bowman were traded to Oakland for Montas and Lou Trivino.
