New York — Yankees manager Aaron Boone erupted at home plate umpire Derek Thomas during Sunday’s 7-1 loss to the Houston Astros, leading to his fifth ejection of the 2025 season and reinforcing his position as Major League Baseball’s most frequently tossed skipper.
The heated confrontation occurred in the third inning when Boone challenged Thomas over a low strike call to Yankees third baseman Ryan McMahon. After shouting from the dugout about the questionable call, Boone was warned by Thomas, who said “I’ve heard you enough Aaron” before ejecting the frustrated manager.
Boone’s fiery response sparks immediate ejection

“You need to fix it,” YES Network audio recorded Boone saying during the heated moment. “You f–king need to fix it.”
Boone’s anger boiled over as he stormed onto the field to confront Thomas directly. Video captured the Yankees manager shouting “You f***in’ need to fix it” at the umpire, expressing his frustration with what he perceived as inconsistent strike zone calls throughout the game.
The ejection came with the Yankees already trailing 2-0 after Jose Altuve‘s first-inning home run and Christian Walker’s RBI double. Third base umpire Jordan Baker intervened during the heated exchange while play continued with McMahon flying out to center field.
“It was the first couple of innings,” Boone said after the game. “I was on him a lot. That’s over and done with and it is what it is and that isn’t the reason we lost this game.”
Season-long pattern of ejections continues for Yankees skipper
The Sunday ejection marks Boone’s fifth removal of the 2025 season, leading all MLB managers. His previous ejection came on July 23 in Toronto when umpire Manny Gonzalez tossed him during the seventh inning for arguing a called third strike on Anthony Volpe.
Since becoming Yankees manager in 2018, Boone has been ejected 44 times, establishing himself as one of baseball’s most combative managers when it comes to officiating disputes. He was ejected six times during the 2024 season.
Thomas, the same umpire who ejected Boone on Sunday, previously tossed the Yankees manager last season during a game against the Atlanta Braves following a controversial walk to Marcell Ozuna.
Yankees’ struggles mount amid disappointing second half

The loss to Houston extended the Yankees’ recent slide, as they have now lost seven of their last nine games. The team that once held a season-high 17 games over .500 mark on June 12 has since gone 20-31, falling six games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East division.
The Yankees currently sit just a half-game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians for the final Wild Card berth, putting their playoff hopes in jeopardy as the season enters its final stretch.
Astros starter Jason Alexander dominated the Yankees through the early innings, not allowing a hit until the sixth inning when Ben Rice managed a single. The performance highlighted the Yankees’ ongoing offensive struggles that have plagued them throughout their disappointing second half.
Umpiring disputes continue to haunt Yankees
The Yankees’ frustration with officiating extended beyond Boone’s ejection. In the fifth inning, starter Max Fried thought he struck out Astros rookie Cam Smith, but the pitch was ruled a ball. Bench coach Brad Ausmus was seen mouthing “let’s go” in apparent disagreement with the call.
Smith capitalized on the disputed call by delivering a two-run double that extended Houston’s lead to 4-0, effectively putting the game out of reach for the struggling Yankees.
“It definitely would have been nice,” Fried said about the close call. “No one’s going to look back and really care. You got to be able to make the pitch and get out of it.”
Manager maintains optimism despite mounting challenges
Despite the team’s recent struggles and his own ejection, Boone expressed confidence in the Yankees’ ability to turn their season around. The veteran manager, who signed a two-year contract extension before the 2025 season, remains steadfast in his belief that the team can overcome their current difficulties.
“Obviously, we’re feeling it, and we know we have to be better,” Boone told reporters Sunday. “We know we have a much higher standard for ourselves, and expectations. But at the same time, we’re in control of this.”
“I wholeheartedly believe that we are going to get rolling and turn this thing around,” Boone added. “When it does, then you start to really build that next layer of confidence, where guys are kinda feeding off each other.”
Historical context of Boone’s ejection record
Boone’s frequent ejections have become a defining characteristic of his managerial tenure with the Yankees. According to MLB records, Boone has the third-highest ejection rate in baseball history among managers, behind only Paul Richards and Frankie Frisch.
The manager’s confrontational approach with umpires has drawn both criticism and support from fans and analysts. While some view his ejections as detrimental to the team, others see them as evidence of his passion and willingness to defend his players.
In 2022, Boone was ejected nine times, four times more than any other MLB manager that season. MLB suspended him for one game in May 2023 following his fourth ejection of that season.
Looking ahead as playoff race intensifies
With the Yankees clinging to their playoff position, every game becomes increasingly crucial. The team’s inconsistent performance, combined with Boone’s frequent ejections, has raised questions about their ability to navigate the pressure of a tight divisional race.
The Yankees will need to address both their on-field struggles and their relationship with umpires if they hope to secure a postseason berth. Boone’s latest ejection serves as another reminder of the tensions that continue to simmer between the organization and MLB officiating crews.
As the regular season enters its final weeks, the Yankees face mounting pressure to turn their disappointing second half around. Whether Boone’s fiery leadership style will ultimately help or hinder that effort remains to be seen.
