New York Yankees 7, Boston Red Sox 6

BOSTON — Aaron Judge hit his 56th and 57th home runs, giving him the most in the major leagues. In the 10th inning, Gleyber Torres hit a three-run double to give the New York Yankees the lead, and they held on to beat the Boston Red Sox 7-6.

Roger Maris set the American League home run record with the Yankees in 1961. Judge, who is playing in New York’s 142nd game, needs four more to tie that record.

After going five games without a home run, Judge hit two solo home runs, one off Nick Pivetta and the other off Garrett Whitlock.

Judge has 10 multi-homer games this season, one shy of the AL record set by Hank Greenberg in 1938, and 26 in his career. Judge’s three hits raised his average to .310, and he leads the majors in home runs and RBI with 123. Judge is hitting.310 with a 1.105 OPS. He has 32 RBI in his last 38 games.

New York, which had to come back from being down three times, now has a six-game lead in the AL East, which is its biggest lead since September 1.

Torres beat Jeurys Familia in the 10th inning, breaking a 4-4 tie (2-3). He has gotten eight RBI in his last three games, but only three in his previous 14.

In the 10th, Clay Holmes hit Reese McGuire with a pitch and got one out, and Alex Verdugo’s RBI single put runners on second and third.

Xander Bogaerts hit a pop fly to short, and Peralta’s fastball bounced for a wild pitch that scored a run. Devers was out on his first slider of the night, which was the seventh pitch of the at-bat. This was his fourth save.

Boston got home runs from rookies Triston Casas, McGuire, and Bogaerts. The Red Sox have lost eight of their 14 games against the Yankees this season.

In the third, Marwin Gonzalez hit the first of three home runs that tied the game for New York. It was a two-run shot.

In 5 1/3 innings, Pivetta gave up three runs and six hits. He walked two people and struck out five.

Over six innings, Gerrit Cole of New York struck out 10, but Boston hit three home runs off of him.

Casas hit his first home run at Fenway Park, and McGuire’s first home run of the season came at the same place.

UP NEXT

Nestor Cortes (9-4, 7.73 ERA), a left-handed pitcher for the Yankees, will make his 25th start of the season. In his last 14 starts, he is 4-3 with an ERA of 3.72.
