It seems the New York Yankees’ pursuit of a frontline starter has hit an unexpected roadblock. Corbin Burnes, the highly sought-after ace of the Milwaukee Brewers, is not available for trade.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports, teams believe the Brewers are keeping a firm grip on Burnes, with a potential reassessment of the situation at the All-Star break. This development is surprising, given the strong rumors surrounding Burnes’ potential trade and the Yankees being considered a suitable destination.
Brewers need Burnes, dash Yankees hope
While the Brewers might still be competitive in their division, there were indications of a possible rebuild in their long-term plans. Burnes, who is set to become a free agent after the 2024 season, was thought to be a key part of this transition.
The Yankees, in need of additional pitching depth to complement Gerrit Cole, appeared ready to make a significant move for this season, and Burnes seemed like an ideal fit.
With the Burnes trade seemingly off the table, the Bronx Bombers are left to explore other options. The free-agent market still holds potential, and there are other trade possibilities to consider. While the pursuit of Burnes may have hit a roadblock, it’s too early to rule out the Yankees from making a significant move before Spring Training.
