New York – A’s Tyler Ferguson wanted to overpower Yankees captain Aaron Judge. He got his wish Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

The Athletics reliever finally met the Yankees superstar in a seventh-inning showdown. Judge made Ferguson pay for his bold words with a thunderous 426-foot home run that sailed into the left-field bleachers. The blast helped seal New York’s 12-5 victory and provided the perfect answer to Ferguson’s public challenge.

Bold words come back to haunt A’s pitcher

Ferguson’s confrontation with Aaron Judge started in 2024 when he told reporters one of his career goals was striking out the Yankees captain. That ambition became reality Sunday, but not in the way Ferguson envisioned.

Judge battled through a full count before crushing Ferguson’s 95.5 mph fastball deep into the Bronx sky. The home run was his second of the day and 30th of the season. It marked his 44th career multi-homer performance.

“That’s why you don’t talk in public,” YES Network analyst Jeff Nelson said on air. “You don’t make a comment that you want to strike out Judge in public. You keep it to yourself.”

Judge’s impressive Sunday moved him ahead of Shohei Ohtani for second place in the major league home run standings. Only Cal Raleigh currently has more long balls than the two-time AL MVP.

The Yankees captain continues building his case for another monster season. His patient approach and powerful swing proved too much for Ferguson to handle.

Ferguson acknowledged the challenge afterward and showed respect for Judge’s ability.

“The best hitter in the league,” Ferguson told reporters postgame. “I was able to get ahead… but I didn’t get the ball quite as high as I would have liked and he made a good swing on it.”

The matchup carried extra meaning beyond baseball. Both players grew up in California’s Central Valley, with Judge starring at Fresno State while Ferguson pitched at Clovis West High School.

“I remember him being a highly touted prospect and obviously a large human being,” Ferguson recalled. “It’s impressive how he’s continued to just get better and better as he’s gotten older.”

Judge said he remembered Ferguson’s name but hadn’t heard about the public comments before Sunday’s game.

Judge’s hot streak returns at perfect time

The Yankees star has rebounded strongly from his recent cold spell. His 30th home run arrived with perfect timing as the calendar approaches July.

Judge remains on pace for another 50-home run season if he stays healthy. His consistent production anchors a Yankees lineup that has struggled to find reliable secondary scoring.

Sunday’s two-homer performance showcased Judge’s importance beyond just raw numbers. His presence in the batter’s box changes opposing pitchers’ approaches throughout the entire lineup.

The Yankees currently sit in contention for the AL East title. The Yankees captain’s continued excellence will be crucial for any serious playoff push in the second half.

The Ferguson-Judge matchup represented more than a typical pitcher-hitter confrontation. Two California natives met on baseball’s biggest stage with personal history adding extra intrigue.

Ferguson handled the aftermath with class and maturity. He learned a valuable lesson about making public statements regarding elite hitters.

Judge simply did what he does best. He saw a mistake pitch and made Ferguson pay the ultimate price.

The final numbers told the complete story: Yankees 12, Athletics 5. Judge collected two home runs while Ferguson absorbed a humbling lesson.
