New York Yankees 6-3 St. Louis Cardinals
Austin Wells delivered crucial offensive firepower with two-run homers in the third and eighth innings, powering the Yankees to a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Wells’ timely hits were instrumental in the Yankees’ triumph.
Wells’ Power Surge Fuels Yankees’ Win
Austin Wells’ two-run homers were the driving force behind the Yankees’ victory. His first blast off Erick Fedde in the third inning put the Yankees up 4-2, while his second shot off Riley O’Brien in the eighth extended the lead to 6-3.
This game marked Wells’ first career multi-homer performance, highlighting the rookie catcher’s hot streak. In his recent 20 games as the Yankees’ cleanup hitter, Wells is batting .346 with five home runs and 21 RBIs.
Marcus Stroman also played a pivotal role, pitching seven strong innings, allowing two runs on nine hits. Stroman’s recent form, including three consecutive wins and his first seven-inning outing since May 31, underscores his resurgence.
Paul Goldschmidt led the Cardinals offensively with three hits off Stroman, including an RBI single, but costly defensive errors and grounding into double plays in the fourth and sixth innings hindered their efforts. The Cardinals’ 0-7 record against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium in the regular season remains a significant hurdle.
Yankees Benefit from Soto’s Contributions
Juan Soto continued his standout play, delivering a game-tying double in the third inning and flashing his defensive skills with an outfield assist in the fifth. His clutch double to right-center field brought Gleyber Torres home from first, setting the stage for Aaron Judge’s at-bat. Though Judge fouled out, Austin Wells capitalized by smashing a homer to right-center.
Soto’s defensive impact was equally significant, as he fired a sharp throw to Anthony Volpe to tag out Alec Burleson, who had overrun second base. This assist marked Soto’s 10th in 127 games, highlighting his value on both sides of the field.
The Yankees’ bullpen played a pivotal role in preserving the lead. Jake Cousins surrendered Nolan Arenado’s 15th homer in the eighth, but Tommy Kahnle stepped in to secure the final out of the inning. Clay Holmes then sealed the win with a double play in the ninth, earning his 29th save in 39 opportunities.
On the mound for the Cardinals, Erick Fedde struggled, giving up four runs on four hits over 5 1/3 innings. Since joining St. Louis from the Chicago White Sox at the trade deadline, Fedde’s record has dipped to 1-4.
