On Friday, the Yankees registered a 4-3 win over the Tigers. This came after the team lost two consecutive spring training games to the Cardinals and the Red Sox and faced a spate of injuries.

For the New York Yankees, Luis Severino started the game. He had a perfect first inning with only seven pitches. In the first few innings of Friday’s game, the right-haded starter pitched fastballs that went as fast as 98 miles per hour. In four innings, Severino gave up two hits, didn’t walk anyone, and allowed two earned runs while striking out three batters.

Behind Severino, the Yankees’ bullpen stepped up and pitched well. Together, Jhony Brito, James Norwood, and Matt Bowman only gave up one run on four hits and struck out five batters.

Eric Haase of Detroit homered for the second time this spring off of Yankees’ Severino. In the third inning, Kerry Carpenter hit a solo home run. The Yankees got on the board when Carlos Narvaez scored on a single by Billy McKinney. Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit a two-run homer to right-center field in the fourth inning, putting the Yankees ahead.

On Friday, Oswaldo Cabrera started at shortstop for the Yankees. In the fifth inning, he contributed by hitting a double to right field. In 2022, Cabrera played 44 games with the big league team and hit six home runs. In 2023, he hopes to solidify a role with New York.

After a home run by Detroit’s Andrew Knapp tied the game in the ninth, the Yankees took the lead again when Matt Pita scored on an RBI single by Anthony Seigler. With the winning run, New York beat Detroit for the second time this spring and improved to 9-6 in the Grapefruit League.

On Saturday, the Yankees are going to host the Phillies.
