New York Yankees 2-12 New York Mets

NEW YORK — New York’s Mets extended their winning streak by dominating their crosstown rivals, the Yankees, with a 12-2 victory to complete a clean sweep in the Subway Series. Francisco Alvarez set the tone early with a home run, contributing three RBIs. Tyrone Taylor also shined, delivering a massive three-run homer that sealed the Yankees’ fate.

Adding to the offensive outburst, Harrison Bader launched a home run and smacked a double that drove in a run for the Mets (39-39). New York chased rookie pitcher Luis Gil (9-3) from the game in the fifth inning. Over two dominant nights at Citi Field, the Mets feasted on Yankees pitching, amassing seven homers, 21 runs, and a whopping 24 hits.

This 15th win in 19 games propelled the Mets back to .500 for the first time since they were 18-18 before a May 10th defeat to Atlanta. Meanwhile, the Yankees, despite leading the AL East, are in a slump, having lost four straight series and eight of their last ten games.

Yankees Struggle Continues Despite Judge’s Heroics

Despite a tough loss, Aaron Judge delivered a standout performance for the Yankees. After a lengthy rain delay, Judge stepped up to the plate in the sixth inning with the team trailing 7-0 and launched a two-run homer. This not only cut the deficit but also etched his name in Yankees history, tying him with Bernie Williams for seventh on the franchise’s all-time home run list with 287.

Despite Judge’s power display, it wasn’t enough to overcome the team’s struggles. However, the home run solidified his place in MLB history, making him one of only three players—alongside Mark McGwire and Ken Griffey Jr.—to reach 30 homers before the All-Star break three times in their careers.

On the pitching side, Sean Manaea showed resilience despite issuing five walks over five shutout innings. He managed to escape jams by inducing three crucial double-play grounders, two of which came from Alex Verdugo. Verdugo, however, broke out of a lengthy slump with a single in the sixth, highlighting missed opportunities for the Red Sox offense.

Yankees Look Ahead to Rematch After Mets Power Surge

Despite another loss, the Yankees can find some hope in the upcoming Subway Series rematch at their home stadium. The Mets continued their offensive dominance, led by Francisco Alvarez, who had a perfect night at the plate, including an RBI double and falling just a triple short of hitting for the cycle.

Alvarez’s performance is part of a broader hot streak for the Mets. They have now homered in 10 straight games, a significant improvement from their early season struggles. The Mets have surpassed the 10-run mark five times in the last 13 games, compared to just twice in their first 65.

While Adrian Houser secured the save for the Mets, the Yankees will be closely analyzing Luis Gil’s recent performances. After a blazing 9-0 start, Gil has struggled in his last two outings. He gave up five runs on four hits and four walks in just over four innings, mirroring his difficulties against Baltimore last week.

The chance for redemption arrives soon, as the Yankees host the Mets for a two-game series on July 23rd and 24th at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees bring their recent struggles north of the border for a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays, who are currently in last place in the AL East. Left-hander Carlos Rodón (9-4, 3.86 ERA) will take the mound for New York in Thursday night’s opener, facing off against Toronto’s right-hander José Berríos (6-6, 3.43 ERA).
